Left the Ocean Shores Marina at 0530 and sailed across the bar. My first # was at 36 miles. Flat water and we hauled ass the entire way. Get to the spot and about 8 charters all working area. Wide open bite in small butts. Most drops we caught two at a time. Water right around 875 ft. Thank good for electric reels. The guys fishing on the charter were grinding them up. We finally settled on three 25-30 lb fish. Ran another 15 miles north to some hard bottom. Unbelievable ling cod, all huge! Plenty of butts there to. Picked out 6 giants and ran south to Sonora Reef and pick-up three limits of seabass. Good water all day! Fried halibut bellys and dranks vodka tonics untill all the fish was packed and sealed. All butts and lings caught on a large pipe jig, and about 24 in above that was a single white grub tied on with a dropper loop.

That's a nice haul. Gaffs come in super handy for holding lings up for pics, after they are brought on board with your net or hand.

Ya know, cause it's illegal to gaff them...

Out there too, pickin up Butts, but we were sorely lacking when trying to find the lings. Just can't seem to locate em.
Very nice haul. I'm envious of the lings.
Nice pics too. Thanks for sharing.

They want you to land them by hand.
Put hand in fishes mouth, soon as he bites down, you pull him into the boat.

Nice haul! Well done. We'll beat each other up over gaffing regulations while the other group rape and pillage..

Send that picture to the WDFW and tell them this hand landing lings just isn't working. Gaffs aren't just nice for pictures.

You yard them in from 500-800ft without issue, grab the leader or pipe jig and bring them in boat. Use tuna cord to jig to have something besides braid to grab..

I think the discussion has been tongue in cheek.
No one is going to noodle a ling. However, the gaffing rule sucks. There appears to be no rational reason you can't gaff lings, just like halibut, tuna, or dog fish. IMHO Toothy fish are not meant to be coddled.
