I departed King Harbor Marina at 0530 on July 03, 2014
and went to Cabrillo to purchase a $60 scoop of squirt bait. I cleared Cabrillo by 0645 and headed to the west end of Catalina. At 0745 I soaked some squid off of Bishop Rock and the general area with nothing but Sand Dabs, Turbot chock full of space alien looking parasites. Some of the bug looking parasites were big enough to eat on their own but frigging gross. I left at 0820 and went over to the west end of San Clemente. Water temps along the way were all high 60's and some 74 degree spots. Not smooth but not to mixed up, 5-10 knt wind. Patties were empty along the way. I pulled up on the 41 spot just west of Castle rock and I could do no wrong. I drifted the area for two hours and yanked some really nice Calico's, Sculpin and Halfmoons. I saw some sportboat out there that was loaded to the gills with fishermen. The site made me appreciate having a small but capable boat. I moved to the east a tad and went on the hook. In no time at all every rock fish in the area was under the boat 100'. After rotating the smaller fish back out to the water and replacing them with bigger models I yanked the anchor and went for the drift down the north side of the Island. I stayed between 100 and 300 feet. I started catching Vermillion and Boccaccio and before I knew it , it was 1600. I beat feet out of there and was back in King Harbor at 1800. All and all a pleasant day of fishing. If I would have had the right company I would have kept going to the Cortez. That is on my short list. It felt very "Fishy" out there. That's all I got....Apogee

The wrong company is not gung ho enough to jaunt 110 miles offshore in a 23' boat (yet). I personally do not care. I have the range. It is a number thing for me............

I certainly hope that will be the case. Nothing like a good stop in the middle of nowhere....It is going to happen this year. It is our turn...
