Jonah wanted to go fishing so we made plans to leave my house at 2:30am on Thursday and try our luck at Waianae. I heard there was some action out of Haleiwa but with the winds blowing 15-20+ I didn’t think it would be too comfortable/safe for my little 15’ Arima. Heard there were some Akus of various sizes around so decided to hunt for some Otarus. We launched at 4:30ish, headed straight out and set lines as we approached the 500 fathom. Just about 2-3 miles from the Pinnacle we came into a nice size pile of birds that was “walking on the water” and the water was boiling. Looked really good but only produced 2-6lb Akus, not exactly what I was hoping for but at least not a whitewash. Continued on to the Pinnacle which appeared pretty dead so headed south in search of the Otarus. A short while later came into another bird pile that did hold Otarus but could not buy a strike so headed further south in search of something more productive. Further south we went the rougher the water got and the wind was blowing a steady 15 knots. Out of no where my port side rigger slammed down and started dumping line off of my Penn 80VSW. 20 minutes later we brought in our 2nd Ahi for 2018 and it weighted in at 115 lbs. We ended the day with a 10lb Aku and was back in the harbor by 12:00 noon. Felt really blessed to have caught theses akus and ahi today! Good luck to all!
