Howzit. Left the the harbor around 6 am, passed the first big bend past makaha and got a huge double strike. one on the 9/0 and one on the 12/0. luckily i had two of my friends and after a good 20 minutes, landed two nice size sailfish. first billfish's ever and gaffing them was the hardest part, one of my friends almost got speared in the belly luckily i grabbed the bill and brought it on deck. so we only had my cooler which would hardly fit one of them, so we laid em on the deck and laid the ice out on them. only had like 70 pounds of ice and the sun was out so we decided to head back in after hitting kaena. an hour later we passed the same area heading back and bam, double strike again! this time two onos and landed both, shot straight in to the harbor at 8am and bought a lot more ice. had bilge water shooting out on the drive back from the melting ice on the fish on the deck. thanks

Spencer, Wow Sailfish, not one but 2! That is indeed a rare catch and a double sailfish is even more rare! To top it off, a double Ono on the way home....can't get much better than that! Thats what I call slaying em!

Spencer, Awesome catch! Congrats on a catch of a lifetime! It is amazing what you can catch on the 40. I think pretty soon you will have caught every species on the ledge.

Good going on your catch. I have caught three sailfish since 1988 in Hawaii. I tried eating the first one and it was OK, but not really good. When I caught the second one I decided to try it again, maybe I did something wrong in the preparation. Nope, still not that great. The third one I caught I let go. They might be good smoked, and maybe fresh sashimi, but overall they are not very good to eat. This is just my opinion, I would be interested to hear what other people think about how sailfish taste. Congrats on your day catching.

Wow! You been catching good lately. WTG on the double sail fish.....one billfish at a time is hard enough but you got 2! The onos look on the bigger side....nice.

Spencer, sounds like your getting the new boat dialed in, nice. Pretty cool on the double sailfish, anyone ever see them using their sails on the surface in Hawaii?

Hey, nekine, I've read that Hawaii sailfish are engine shy, and that they're more likely hooked from kayaks, sail boards and sailboats. What engine are you running?

    Congrats on another excellent catch!

    Hey Roy,
Last year I helped cut a friend's sailfish and was excited to get some to try. I had heard that it was good eating but I too was disappointed ......I ate mine as sashimi and IMHO I like stripeys better.

    Spencer,
Now that is fricken COOL... good goin' on a banner ledge morning. I know of one other sailfish that died on that deck, caught it back in '96. If I were you "keep fishin' the ledge" don't go outside lookin' you're havin' a great summer.

    Pupule,
The engine is the 2005 merc 4.3 vortec w/ an alpha drive. That boat (FKA Kai'io) rasies all kinds of fish right in the prop wash, so it has the right rumble/hum/noise that doesn't scare fish away.

    Cheers
    Pat
