We got in the water at 5 am and found some Opelu for bait. We Started to head straight to the Waianae Pinnacle. There we found a bunch of boats working a Porpoise school. So we put out 2 live Opelu's, With no bites for about an hour we stopped and sent one down, as soon as I stopped pulling line out of the reel, about 30 fathoms deep I felt the weight of the lead and then a bite. Fish on. I asked my wife to reel in the fish as I went to put on my gloves and get the gaffs ready, looked back and the pole was bent in half. The fish was straight down and no shot gun rod holders caused to pole to give. I hand lined the fish the rest of the way in and was lucky it didn't make any runs. Aloha, Mike

    Good going Mike!

It's a good thing you had the wife as crew so she could help out. Too bad about the pole, but main thing you got the fish. Looks like you'll be eating some tasty poke and sashimi for awhile. Congrats!

    Mike & Lani,

Way to keep all of your options open (opelu in the porpoise) certainly saves on gas and gets you the bite (sometimes) when all of us trollers are watchin' in envy. Good goin' on the ahi, especially after the rod decided to give way.

There you go. Leaving early to catch bait and going through all that trouble to keep them alive is hard work. It eventually paid off. Good job! Nice fish!

Sounds like a solid day. It feels extra good to know you did the extra work to put fish in the box, especially when the bite has been a little spotty.

    Mike,
Congrats on your Ahi! I like the change up.....going to bait is the way to go when lures don't seem to draw their interest!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. That pole must have been at least 14 years old, it has seen better days. But don't tell my Wife, I'm still giving Her a hard time about it. The Ahi was one of the best i've had in a long time , the fish didn't put up much of a fiight so it did not burn. We are planning to take the boat out again this Friday. Hope he fish stick around. Aloha
