I’m an old Long Range fishermen …
I haven’t been on any long 14-20+ day trips in a few years.
My question is about a good jig reel and a good live wire bait reel ?
I still have my Avet HXJ with 400+ yards of 60# braid … I usually fish with 60/80+ yards of 40 pound … on my older Calstar e-glass on my 2000 era 800H rod …
I also have two Accurate Tern’s …one 500 and a 600N … both single speeds with 60# backing … star drags … fished on a Phoenix Axis 909H … a 40-50# stick…
I still have a 9’2” 724 Harrington with cork tape … it’s caught it’s share of wahoo I still have my old Torium 20 ... it was my old wahoo reel ... I used to replace those graphite drag washers after trip ...now I have the new style.
I kept one of my Penn 12T's tricked out by Cal's with a 30 handle ...
It was my drop back a jig or bait on the slide ... what a killer ... stay up in the bow... drop into low gear and crank them 40-50's to the boat ...
Any suggestions ?

All the stuff you mentioned worked perfect for you when you last used it, and will work perfectly fine now. Go with it.

I think your 100% right …
I sold off my older Newell’s (8) … no parts
And two Trinidad’s (can’t get parts)
Thought I’d try an Accurate star drag for that casting edge for a change…
I’ve sold off (7) Penn’s tricked out by Cals.
Kept a 12T and 30T both 2 speeds…
Been using Okuma Makaria’s on the bluefin … smaller, lighter weight, tough.
Lots of good rods and reels available…

I use 50# for bombs and 40# for bait. I’d put 50# on the HXJ for bombs! Single speeds are fine for ‘hoo, I’ve never gone into low on one… I’d probably get my hand slapped by a deckhand if I did!

I hate throwing bombs …I only have 2 in my bucket … one trip on the RP I lost 16 jigs out of my bucket, but we put over 300 wahoo on the boat in six hours… I never saw so many hungry wahoo … if you let your jig sink even for a ten count they’d swallow 18” of wire and dink you off…

I enjoy wahoo … their just a big barracuda with a rocket that fires out there butts when hooked…
I have an UC RGP80 Terminator, RGP76 Predator, CX80 Raptor, RCE 700XXH-C, and a Calstar 775XH, Calstar BT6480… lots of stuff.
My favorite wahoo jig casting used to be an older Calstar GRTR 800XH paired with my HXJ 5/2-MC Raptor…it’s spooled with 60# braid and a long 40# top shot. When I got bit I’d hold the spool with my taped fingers keep cranking and inch a step backward …if you can… hold the spool, stretch mono.
Bury that hood deep…let them head shake.just keep backing up just a little… hookup ratios increased.
Lots of rods that’ll work … I’m more concerned about reels that’ll cast a bond or jig ?
I try to keep it down to 10 rods on the longer trips and throw in a few extra reels …
Thanks for the in put …

You’re fine with your HXJ. A stiff rod is good but frankly you’re pointing the rod at the fish almost all the time. I wouldn’t worry about upgrading your tackle as it should be fine. Enjoy!

Hmm, I try not to fish Long Range trips with a crew that might scream at me. If it happens, I’ll first take it up with the crew member. Something like this: “I deserve more respect than that and you don’t know me well enough to talk to me like that.”

Then, I would make sure the captain was made aware of what happened

Interesting you say that , Steve. there is a veteran deckhand on a boat I have fished several times who is the only person, in the world, who has yelled unpleasantly at me, since I was a child. I had asked his thoughts on what too to when my hoo had gone under the boat at midships. Rather than explain his rationale for the directive to lift the rod rather than put the tip down for a better angle, he just screamed that he'd been doing it for 30 years and don't question his advice. I have fished the boat since. he was not aboard. I was glad.

I agree and most likley won't ride that boat again for this and other reasons, just should have stayed with the Indy

The fish are still the same. Some are a little meaner than others. You should be fine with what you have. for bait I personally use a Talica 10 with #40 spectra tied to a wire leader. For bombs and Raiders I use a Tranx 500 HG. Make SURE to get a NOMAD DTX 220 for the wahoo troll. I like the pink Mackerel.. Tight lines

What Avet does John Collins fish for Wahoo with jigs? I think I remember the model but not sure. Looked like a go to reel of his for wahoo. Picking line up very fast. He was on the 9 day with me in 2019

I loved the OG TN30 super upgraded. I would build a small mound in the middle to pick line up faster. Most preferred the 40 at a slower ratio

I think the 30 is wide so I can get the tip of the rod whipping in a circular motion. Which I like for yoyoing or hoo grinding. It's like a exhausting rhythm that imo creates action to the lure

👍🏾 Narrow reel picking line up fast. With a full spool from not bombing over casts
