When I started Wahoo fishing we were using Penn Mariners tricked out with Newell parts. Now that was a Dinosaur compared to todays reels. Then I went to a Penn 4/0 Senator tricked out with Tiburon and Newell parts. Then I went to a Tiburon SST, which model I do not remember. That reel for some reason just never clicked with my brain.
Today my go to Wahoo reels are both Avet HXJ Raptors'
One used with a Calstar GF700XH. Been using that combo every since the two came on the Market.
The second set up is a Calstar GF765H. Now this is a new rod for the second set up which I use with jigs weighting more that 5 oz. The second set set up has evolved from using a BT6454H, to a BT64080H, to a GF800XH now to the GF765H. My personal conclusion is I over shot the Wahoo to many times with the longer rods when using 5+oz jigs. The new GF765H made with new updated hi end components results in a big weight reduction from the old BT6465H which was a great combo in my younger days.
I guess this my long winded way of saying you really do not need a long rod to fish Wahoo with 5+oz jigs.
For bombs I use a Black Hole 350/450 gram spinning rod with a Makaira 30000. Talk about speed, whew!!! this set up can crank a bomb at the speed of light with so much ease it is incredible. You really have to be careful that you do not crank the bomb thru the tip guide as it comes at you so fast.

This old farts 2 cents opinion.

I picked up a Seeker 7x and paired it with a MXJ Raptor. The thought process was a smaller two speed for the ridge/rocks that was light enough to cast all day and had the power in case a larger tuna bit. This was to compliment Trinidad 30a/UC Del Mar 9' in order to have two rigs ready to go.

Being that I wanted to give the new "investment" a fair shake, I found myself using it more than the Trinidad rig. My thoughts were that the rigs cast about the same distance as each other and the smoothness award definitely went to the 30a, but the MXJ Raptor was fine.

There were no wahoo to be found on my November 10 day so I often let the wahoo bomb sink forever and landed a handful of 25lb+ yellowtail. Everyone saw my tattered bomb and referred to it as my hot yellowtail jig. I would not hesitate to use either in any scenario but did enjoy going back and forth between them.

I like it Lou. I use a Black Hole Spinner and Daiwa Dogfight-similar speed retrieve. Wahoo love it and makes them easier to hook.

I have (2 of the Tranx 500’s but in a jig bite I find myself going back to my trusty Trini40 and7’ Original GUSA 70x. I have hooked wahoo on the tranx but do not feel like I can turn their head and surf them like the 40 can.i have all the fancy new rods but the original 70x I can fish all day and not get tired. Looking forward to the shinnies in October on the Big Bird!

I love my JX Raptor for tossing wahoo jigs.
The only Avets I own are Hjx Raptors. It is definitely my wahoo jig and bomb reel of choice. Nice and narrow, great drag systems and is a multi purpose 2 speed reel. Great for yoyo yellowtail fishing too. But the specs on the Shimano 20 speedmaster have me intrigued! I would love some input from those that have fished them for wahoo! 52 inches per turn of the handle, HEG high torque gears, it looks like the same width as a talica 20, which is a pretty darn good wahoo reel! But the speedmaster has a slight bit faster retrieve. On paper it looks like a great wahoo bomb reel! Would love any input from fellow bloodydecker's!

There are still a lot of Newell 533’s around. Not too cheap. It you are looking for one put a note on the used rod and reel blog and how much you are willing to pay. I saw 3 on EBay.

I use my MXJ Raptor on an 8 ft Seeker 30-60 Hercules as my live bait or surface iron outfit. The soft tip can flip the bait way out. The soft tip also keeps tension on the fish as I run down the rail, and the backbone lands them. One of my favorite rigs .... hell of a lot of fun!

I kill them with the Tranx 500 PG filled with JB 80 hollow and 3’ 100 lb mono leader via loop to loop. I like a Phenix Black diamond hybrid 809xh 8’ for the stick. Jamie can attest to the slaughter.

Maybe it was a Tranx 500 HG?

I like my tilefish too and don't bother with the 50# FC leader I just use 4' 130# FC tied to spectra with a FG.....works for me.....

I had a buddy raving about the his new Tranx 500 for wahoo until he took it on our 15 day trip last year. That reel got worked over and is now in for rebuild. I suggested a 4/0 reel like a Trinidad 40N or even the TN40 for the torque they produce. Now he understands why. If you cant find a 40N then get a Penn fathom 40N2 .You can thank me later. The Phenix 809 is supposed to be the wahoo slayer rod but I heard yesterday from the factory it has been discontinued, so if you can find one buy it. But buyer beware, those rods are very unforgiving if you high stick them.

I use an OG Trinidad 16, which is basically a narrowed 20 for throwing irons for wahoo, I use a Trinidad 20 when fishing bait for wahoo, and I use a Trinidad 40N for throwing wahoo bombs. I got it covered.

Well, I like the TranX 500 HG for Wahoo on a Phenix psw809xhj. Best Wahoo on a bomb was 53# on that setup. I guess I might have to pick up another 809xhj if they're dropping them. Uh... why would anyone be high sticking a Wahoo?

Because they either forget in the excitement of the battle or don't know what they are doing with that rod. It happens more than you might think.
