In the past I've always added a little Permatex # 2 non-hardening sealant to the o-rings when reassembling parts on my out drive. Haven't had a leak or a problem and this recommendation came from two boat shops in my area.
Just wondering what everyone else does. I've heard just a layer of good marine grease has the same results. Putting a new motor in the Skippy and I'm going to go through the out drive while I'm into it.

I use Quicksilver Perfect Seal. Seems to do the trick. Sounds basically the same as what you're using. I have a pint size can that should last me about 14 lifetimes.

I was looking at that product. Seems real close to the permatex. Looks to be Mercury's version

Permatex on the surfaces not the orings

Curious as to why you recommend this? O-rings usually benefit from a little type of lubrication before assembly. I haven't had a problem in the past or seen any odd results from permatex being on the o-rings.
