Always having fun on the Vagabond and meeting new friends. Great crew ! Thanks to all on board to make it a fun trip.

We cleared the point at around noon 7/11 and headed west towards an area north of San Clemente- small seas and OK weather.
Some breezers were reported near the 43 that day so we went that way to investigate but never saw anything.
After dinner, we were in the area and started dropping jigs on the night time school.

The bite stated at about........... Typical 3 day BFT trip....... fell asleep for 3 hours in the middle of writing this.. The bite stated at about 9:30 pm
Some wind made for a bit of drift so changed out my 220 gram fjig or a 400 gr before fishing. Made all the difference along with having line marked for depth.

We picked away with main bite from 10:30pm to 2:30am . said I would stay for one more stop but went to sleep - good as next stop was 4 am ish. many other of the fleet in the small area hitting the same schools and they too picked away that night. I ended up landing 4 and losing 4 . Others got skunked for the night. Knife jigs mostly. Not really hitting the flatfall. My jig = 400 gr rip roller, cotton candy color ( blue/pink) - see photo but use big mustad 6/0 hooks, not those in pic.
middle pic is other BFT I got. next is biggest bft

Right place, right timer, doing right thing long enough - you get some fish. The big one came as I walked out from eating donner in my sleeping clothes. Acpt. Cameron said good school coming thru. None put jigs in waterquickly except for crew - Jakethe Snake. Swo I just dropped mine with Jake's. Insta bite for my big one.

So bite and people fishing dwindled as we got closer to sunrise. Daytime fishing had no fish biting.

Back to nite # 2 jigging. Slower nite for us and other boats who got from 0 tiop 4 fish per boat. We got 3 fish total, my big one, I got another larger model later on, plus one other BFT for another person. Bite not like first night and folks lost steam by midnite ish.
https://www.google.com/imgres?imgur...hUKEwjuj5uI8fb4AhWILTQIHaHPD2oQMygCegUIARDeAQ
so we spent 1 am to dawn headed south to an area 20 or 30 miles west of Coronado's looking for paddies. Hardto fins and to see as some bump. Got a few/some yellowtail for each person. Some 12 + pounds , few small ones. Couple of bonies. No dodos. Bonies were foaming with bird schools. No BFT to be seen. Quit trolling to avoid bonies and saw time to look for paddies/YT
https://www.google.com/imgres?imgur...hUKEwjuj5uI8fb4AhWILTQIHaHPD2oQMygCegUIARDeAQ
No nite time fish for nite # 3 as no BFT in this southern region. So all had an excellent dinner, cleaned gear and ourselves , and slept for some as we headed in. In the harbor alittle early.
https://www.google.com/imgres?imgur...hUKEwjuj5uI8fb4AhWILTQIHaHPD2oQMygCegUIARDeAQ
Almost fished for halibut while we waited a few hours to dock but just way to tired. I have many days of fishing to come and fish already from earlier trips so gave all my BFT to those who did not get one this trip but wanted some. Kept one little YT for a ceviche mix. Big Mike, next 2 trips fish are coming your way.

They start dropping like flies in the wee hours after dropping heavy jigs many, many times and winding them back up. Normally only a handful of guys are up at 3 am.

Great report and saw your photo on Instagram. Love the Vagabond...

Yeah they absolutely have. I haven’t been to the landings in a while, but they had bins of 300/400g earlier in the season.

Here's a better pic of the fish (you can click on it and a Rip Roller doesn't come up LOL). John's apparently too wiped out to even text me the weight. I'm guessing 200+

Have done well with the Rip Rollers this year. Prefer winding up the 300's though from 400 feet LOL

Color does not seem to matter but I was bummed when someone sawed off one of my 300's when I had a fish going in the dark.

That said, watched a guy get two good ones on a plain 16 ounce glow torpedo sinker with two assist hooks on the bottom....LOL

    All on the Vagabond...

parking situation: All my trips have left in the mornings so far this year and i tend to get to the landing around 4 am. at that time there have always been many parking spots.

Where it gets crowded is from 6 am to 8 am or so when the boats arrive to offload and the people w/ cars show up to do the later drop off/park/pick up fish/people. My buddy coming to get fish circled the lot 10 + times and never found a spot.

But then after 8 am or so the spots stafrted to open up as people left after unloading, packing upo, etc.

Been there in the afternoon 2 pm to 4 pm and it also was VERY packed & full wiuth many people doing the resturant thing and not really related to the fishing. No spots for this time.
Hopefully someone will chiime in who has done the PM departure time

You’ll be fine if you’re arriving that early.
Worst case scenario i’ve run into was holiday weekend where overfill lot was full as well. Found street parking ~5 min walk on locust st. Just don’t leave any valuables in the car regardless of where you park.

Looks like you had a blast. Beautiful color on the big one. Kinda looks like the …..

    Thanks for the report.
brought to you by "Roadrunner". That is my online name, not "mustad". Included the info/pic to help the newer folks who may not know what is what. One always get the what it bite and where did you catch it if that is left out of a report. Would have posted whatever worked.

Second night of BFT, Monday 7/11, the fleet averaged 0 to 4 BFT per boat. We got 3 fish total and 2 of the 3 were my bigger ones on that jig.

BFT were very picky but hit this jig. Used similar 400 g rip roll jig but different color and they would not touch it. After I got limits, used this other jg on boat rod to try to catch and hand off.

    Fyi to help anyone

One of the Vagabond boat rods has that same Rip Roller but 300 gram. It has absolutely no paint left on it but originally it was a Katy Perry (Blue/Pink)...

I think the joke about Mustad is because half your post hyperlinks on my phone to the Mustad jig.
