I've read a lot of threads on a lot of sites about using a marine surveyor....is this limited to larger complicated boats???? What about a simple 21 ft single modern outboard center console? Still need to spend the $400-500?? Would appreciate experienced thoughts...thanks

Dpends on if you know enough. Engine survey is seperate. You should be able to come up with a checklist and do your own survey, test every system.

As said above, get the engine looked at by a mechanic if you are dropping considerable money on the rig. That's totally separate from the boat survey.
