I put a bigger grip on mine, one of Alan Tani's grips. Turns the reel into a grinder.

If your interested in modding your 40/2 talk to the guys at Cals. I stopped by the Cals booth yesterday at FH and was talking to a guy about the service they perform on the Fathom 40/2.

I don’t want to misquote the guy so it would be better for you to talk with them. According to their flyer the service is $95.

Basically, they bump the amount of drag with freespool up.

Again, don’t quote me and for exact details about the service, talk to them.

Is that the smaller or larger of Alan’s grip?

the knob in my FT40Ld2 its largest Alan sells, the smaller is almost the same size of the stock penn knob but in "T".

It's 95 bucks to have your fathom blue printed. I spoke with the guys at cals. The freespool performance at high levels of drag post service is unbelievable. They had one at the booth and it spun better than some of my star drags. Will be sending both my 25 and 40 n to get blue printed before the summer.

Yep the Cal service on the Fathom give it about 5 more pounds of useable drag with supreme free spool.

    negative amigo.
the only time changing a handle Knob will affect on a cast is when the reel activate the drag moving the handle forward like the baitcasting / lowprofile reel, other than that you are good to doit on any reel.
