It was supposed be done last Wednesday. It was not. I called after two days of hearing nothing and spoke to the young man that was running the crew to get the job done. He told me that he removed my lower panel (the one with all of my switches ie; bilge pump , running lights, courtesy lights, forward bilge pump, anchor light, windshield wipers, etc and made a panel out of Starboard and flush mounted my LED screen gauge for the engines. He went on to say that he cut a section out of my console below the hydraulic helm and relocated my switches to that area. HE FRIGGEN CUT A HUGE HOLE IN MY CONSOLE! He decided that mounting the switches below a sometimes leaky hydraulic steering pump was a great idea besides the fact that I now cannot see them unless I stoop down to look under the helm. All of this without any pre authorization from me about my view of this Get er done push. Ah youth. I did look at pictures to confirm the worst and this really, really does not work for me. They said it's okay we can repair the hole we cut as good as new. I said are you going to paint it or use gelcoat? So, it is not done, they said Wednesday...again.
It makes me feel kind of bad that this puts me on the defensive for my views on how my install should be, but I do not want my switches mounted below my helm, I want them where I can see them just like Boston Whaler had them mounted in the first place...........There is the update.............Ap

Pretty simple issue, tell them where you want the gauges, once you get the boat back have a fiberglass guy make repairs then send them a bill.

The tech could have sent you a pic of the location of where he wanted to put the switches first, right!

I am pretty pissed right now. They sent me a note saying they are going to charge me $400 for switches I did not order to put on a panel that I did not order. Here is my reply:
Never mind I am not paying $400 for the switches. Put my original panel back on there like you were supposed to in the first place with the holes and everything along with my original switches that were working and in place. Take the butch plate that is supposed to be mounted on the under side the throttle quadrants and get it off the top of my console and place it underneath where it belongs. It is unsightly and incorrectly installed. You had permission to glass in my trim tab position holes but you covered the hole with the butch plate that should be under the console not on top. I Do not have the money you apparently think that I have. There is no way you will be able to fix my console properly. To do so, the area you cut out without permission or consult, will have to be filled in and glassed. Polyester does not effectively stick to polyester so this "patch" will be weak. The surface will have to be matched. That is NOT paint on there. It is Gelcoat, also a polyester that will have to be matched, sprayed, wet sanded and buffed out. The original Gelcoat is not a thin coat but is several mills thick originally sprayed into the mold before the glass substrate is applied and would take several external applications to build up to be able to sand flat. That console cost thousands of dollars and you guys cut it up and I am less than happy about it. The boat is late...way late you will have had my boat for a month coming up next week. You sold me engines and gave me a build date without having support in place and has cost me 1/3 of the fishing season. Yes you have my boat and I am powerless. My expectation would be that when you gave me a build date as a "Platinum" dealership you would have had my parts. You only told me about having to get the left hand motor and it would be there in a week three weeks ago. Time for you guys to step up to the plate. I shall not pay for mistakes any more than I must. I am already paying a huge time penalty and you want to charge me $400 for a friggen switch panel after these fopahs forget it. Your the professionals be professional and give me the owners or managers name. I think it is time for a talk...........m

So, am I being outrageous? When I get bent out of shape like this it is hard to tell from my reference..

I think that you are well below what I would be doing once I received those pic's! you sir are a cool headed man and try and stay that way until your boat is done and returned to you... it is best to keep your head like you have been until you get your boat back

You are 100% in the right.
I don't get why they had to move the switch panel? Every repower I have done where I replaced old analog gauges with a digital screen, there was more than enough room where the gauges used to be to make a panel for the new screen in the old gauges place, WITHOUT having to move any switch panels.
Maybe I missed something with you situation. I am sorry that you are starting to stare down a rabbit hole, but keep a stearn posture and YOU drive the bus, not them.
I might suggest contacting the regional Evinrude rep to apprise them of the current situation. Most likely the rep will contact that dealer (if they are even worth a damn) and get the dealer's side of the story. That situation will get everyone on the same page and let your dealer know that you mean business.
And everyone wonders why I have to micro manage every project. Your story is the perfect example.
As I said before, good luck.

I agree with everything except the "i dont have the money you think i have" part.$400 bucks is a drop in a bucket after the money your'e spending on a repower. With that said i wouldnt give up 400 bucks either just because somebody didnt think before they cut a hole in your boat.

Sure is easy to spend somebody else's money. I had to go into hock to finance these motors in the Autumn of my life. I am not retired, I am 64 years old and go to work on "Maggie's Farm" everyday, week after week, month after month, year after year, decade after decade. $400 is a lot of money to me especially when you add it to the other nibbles and bites for this project. This crap keeps up I will sell everything down to my last fishing pole and buy beer!!! Mmmmmmmmm beeeer......

In theory you are correct. In application this cuts off your nose to spite your face. let's say I did what you suggest. First I pay them for work I did not want. Then I pay another person to fix the problem so I can have a bill to send the perps. Now I am out money x 2 places. They refuse to write a check (which is what would happen) and I go to the County seat of where the transaction took place and file a small claims suit... Let's say after all of the driving, delays, time off of work to do fun things like go to court on an adversarial basis, I win and get a judgement, now you have to collect. Till tap? Serve the owner with a notice by the Sheriff at additional cost for another day in small claims court? You can eventually win....I do not want to fight people, I want to fight top water fish..and they have my boat.......

And most people wonder why I do my own boat work.
Probly becuse I can't trust anyone else to get it done right.
I think in your case you just have to wait it out.
Hopefully it's not to much longer.

Exactly..That is why I do all of my own work too. BUT, in the case of new motors a dealership has to install for the most part for warantee issues. If you purchased a motor from let's say Florida, most of the time they will not ship to a private individual. They want those motors sent to a dealer for install. There are convoluted ways around this but it gets to be a major pain for not all that much gain. Other than that I do all of my own work..........on pretty much everything......

Are you dealing directly with Matt?
My Salesman is Frankie, another guy Josh Head of sales and I met several people doing the work that I cannot remember their names. It does not take a month to hang two motors...or ...it has been a month of prime fishing time and my repower is not done....Look at the picture of my throttle quadrant. They took the mounting plate that should be under the mount area and layed it on top like a gasket between the console and the throttle/shift housing. I guess they did not want to bend their wrist.

I wouldn't want to fight either but every post you put up about this shop screams of incompetence. I have installed a handful of V6 outboards and none of them have taken more than two days so I just don't get these guys.

You have them putting the old switch panel right, if there is any glass work to do, cover the holes temporarily with aluminum or Starboard and get to fishing, fix that crap in the winter, or let these guys screw you out of your summer

That was my plan and instructions from the beginning. I ordered a new panel from Boston Whaler months ago. I figured it would show up when it showed up. I was just going to cut out a thin piece of sheet aluminum and run it up next to the switches and call it a day and take care of the rest of this stuff during the down season. A month of prime fishing has gone by now. I might be to pissed to enjoy the rest of the season, (right up to where I end up in a wide open bite then all of my angst will melt away) Hey at least it is costing me tens of thousands of dollars.....

I think I got their attention:
Hello Apogee,
From the report all departments involved presented to me, we forecast a total of 26 man hours left from the technicians' hands-on installation and the fiberglass finishing details. There will be multiple technicians assigned to complete this in an expedited time frame, achieving the quality result we laid out on the phone.

We anticipate the build portion to be complete end of Wednesday, which includes our comprehensive Sea Trial that will accomplish and record the following data:

Achieve ideal RPM-to-top-speed ratio.
Ensure the boat gets on plane properly.
All systems operate correctly on water.

Bolts Sealed and Marked: _______________________________
Drain Plugs: __________________________________________
Through Holes: ________________________________________
Check Trailer (wiring, lights, tires, lug nuts): __________________
Speed:
@ planing ________________
@ cruising_________________
@ open throttle ____________
RPMs:
@ planing ________________
@ cruising_________________
@ open throttle ____________

Navigation (gps, etc.): _____________________________________
Electronics: ______________________________________________
Water intrusion: _________________________________
Rattling/noises: _____________________________________
Cavitation: __________________________________________

Once all systems check out good to go from a successful Sea Trial (including confirming the correct prop specs directed from Evinrude as well as our local consultant), I have instructed Service Dept to perform a complimentary top to bottom deluxe detail on your boat Thursday. More thorough than the "typical" cleaning, this is scheduled 4.5 hours does:

Complete Detail of floor.
Complete Detail of deck.
Pressure wash w/ soap & water.
Remove/lift dirt, rust, and deep stains with high power cleaner.
Condition and moisturize fabric w/ conditioning treatment to preserve and increase lifespan of.
Finish with 303 aerospace protectant SPF40 spray to add shine and prevent sun damage.
Pressure wash hull.
Clean/detail console and upholstery, fiberglass deck and floor.

It was good chatting with you earlier, albeit I wish under better circumstances. I feel we have open lines of communication, and I will personally be involved with ensuring we are on schedule, all the while having confidence in quality our Service Dept delivers.

Have a good evening, and rest assured, we are on this. Everyone understands your expectation you have and deserve, and I am conveying that loud and clear. I will be in touch with you every step of the way, expect it to be nothing but accurate, and to earn your trust back from these missteps to service your boat in the future.

Thank you,
