Inshore Twice in a week

Last Thursday left Avalon heading west towards 2H. About 4 miles west of Avalon, call my buddy who was suppose to be heading to 2 Harbors. But he is delayed out in Pedro so we decide to head back towards HH. Wife spots about 50 yards of birds sitting on the water and flocks overhead. “Head that way I want some pics” she says. Than the splash. Boats hauling it to Cat I’m sure to get a mooring for LD weekend but if they opened their eyes I’m sure close enough to see what’s going on. Or they dont fish and don’t care. 1 Mahi in the boat. Leave and wife spots a small paddy and wants to give a shot. Normally I would say waste of time but…2 more in the boat. Yesterday decide to fish horse shoe and not a soul around. 28 bass in two hours and decide to head in at noon. Water dirty brown. Heading in see a pod and want to get some vids for the youngest. Then the are you kidding me happens. My old eyes playing a trick? Get the binos out and WTF? Got one small micro Mahi that I tossed back. One sail boat boat circles to see whats happening. He throws out and I see him pull a good sized one in. Called my buddy who was doing Rocky Point for a heads up but he already left to take his clients back to Redondo. Woke this morning and was going to try again but decided one in a million 2x in a week won’t happen because today I would have been cruising trying to get lucky against the odds.

Good work, Karl! Never leave a paddy unturned is my motto. I've seen large schools of pelagics hanging around the strangest, smallest things.

WTG on putting fish on the boat instead of blowing it off and running over fish in the channel like so many people do. Sounds like your wife has pretty good fish sense.

I have been on the water and haven't seen any, thats where I've been. I havent seen one local So Cal 1/2 day boat putting Mahi Mahi on the board. I guess housewives know more than season charter captains. Maybe I should invite my wife next outing and we can hang out at the Newport bait barge and get some wide open Dorado.

Just b/c fish aren't biting doesn't mean they're not there. Was out saturday. Lots of BFT. Not so much biting.

If you're a captain shouldn't you be working on expanding you're customer base and not making sarcastic comments to other people?

Fortunately my friend's on call captain happens to be one of the captains on a boat that has a name that starts with Royal....so yes they know where the fish are.

If you want to work less maybe you should try being on call for the guys at the balboa angling club. My buddy pays his captain a shit ton a money just to drive the boat for all of the tournaments, keep the gear in check and the boat in top condition. When he's not running tournaments he's back on the royal with the rest of the fleet.
