Just curious if people ever catch tuna around Cedros Island. I really enjoyed the yellowtail there last trip. Saw some lovely bonita come aboard there.

09 on the shogun we had a full speed yt/yft/black skipjack bite off turtle bay. Just south of cedros. Fly line you would get a tuna, dloop/yoyo instant yt.

Over the years I have seen a few YFT landed at Cedros proper....Always just a single fish here and there.

Been to Cedros a few times. The boat can go straight out and find a paddy and we've caught tuna under them.

Around 10 years ago, I was on a 5 day to Cedros.. we had WFO yellowfin tuna fishing in the gap between Cedros and Benitos... off the chart on fish in the 25 to 45# class... limited out.. then ran into Cedros for great yellowtail fishing..

With that said, I have not seen any tuna there on other trips..

Mostly porpoise school YFT, off Benitos & Cedros in early Fall, 10 to 50lbs, for the most part. Only a few times, very few, have I seen YFT caught while on the anchor at Benitos. I can remeber while trying to make day time macks on the lee of the North head of Cedros, we saw a small pod of porpoise and checked them out. We ended up slaying 150 YFT, 40 to 50lbs, all very close to the Island, in like 30 to 50 fathoms. I have encountered a similar YFT, porpoise school bite on the lee of SCI, very close to the Island, and have also caught BFT on the anchor in Pyramid Cove.
For the most part if your going to Cedros or Benitos plan for YT, but you never know, stranger things have happened, like Wahoo at the Bait Receiver in LBC.

Ranger bank has produced great offshore action when conditions are right, BFT, YFT, ALB, kelp paddy Mahi & YT, also a great night time sword fish spot, or day time, I dumped a dandy their once.

I think Spike has it right! After several trip there every once in a while you may get a stray! But for the most part of the Islands in the gap in blue water 30 fathoms or better and mostly on either porpoise or kelps!
When there is tuna near the fleet of seiners a real quick to wipe that up!
I did 2009 Oct and we had Dorado on Benitos and saw a few Marlin!
Go fishing Plan for Yellows and maybe you get lucky!

I was on the Vagabond October 2009 and Mike found us a good schools of YFT 25-50# in between Cedros and Benitos under the porpoise.

We hit yf under the porpoise just off the south west end last October (actually 09). We were anchored up just slaying the yellowtail, and suddenly here come the porpoise right on our stern. Tossed out a 6x jr and WHAM... instant bendo. It was pretty cool!!

Thanks for the responses and stories. I was curious upon looking at the google earth images of Cedros and Guadalupe. I notice substantial differences in the ocean floor around those two islands. I was really impressed with the abundance of yellowtail around Cedros last year. Had a great time catching (and now eating) them. I could probably retire there. Get me a little bungalo and a boat and I'd be set. That's a decade or so off, though...

Never been to "the Lupe". I hope to fish it someday.

Now that the cats out of the bag, have seen Elvis there many times. When I am heading though that area I am always in the glasses.
