I will be visiting the SFBay area from Tennessee in May. Plan on a shallow rock trip out of Half Moon Bay on May 4th. There will be 4-6 of us. We’d like to hire a 6-pack. Any recommendations?
John, your best place to ask about SF Bay area boats would be to post in the Fishing Reports forums: California Sportfishing Reports: Northern California Fishing Reports. The guys who fish up there mostly talk on that forum rather than the Chit Chat forum.
Gary, I appreciate the suggestion and was considering the NorCal reports forum, BUT there is a sticky that emphasizes all posts are fishing reports and reports only. Unfortunately, it’s extremely limiting if anyone wanted to share a boat ride or trade equipment or otherwise network within the general area. So, I’ll follow the rules and hope a reasonable mod with make an exception. Thanks Gary!
BTW, my personal info says San Jose. I’ve retired to Tennessee, but I just can’t seem to edit my bio. Click on my location in the edit page and it brings up a map. How do I change it?
Not to familiar with hmb, however if your down to go to sf bay try right hook sportfishing, or sea shift sportfishing.
Not sure of six packs running out of HMB. Out of Berkley or SF I'd recommend Right Hook, Flash Sportfishing, Legal Limits. That time of year you may do rockfish, salmon or striper/halibut.
I have recently asked on the Northern California Reports board for some info on operations up there and the thread was treated well. No hand slap for me and the guys up there are all very helpful. I would post there and not worry yourself. If guys can post all day long on the southern california report boards about knots, regulations, gear recommendations, fish counts they saw online but were not actually on the boat and other stupid shit...you will be fine.
If you're only 4, you can try FishOn (Tom) out of HMB. http://www.fishonsportfishing.com/ I haven't fished with him, only sold him a reel. Seemed like a nice, fishy guy.
Tom Joseph- 408-348-4866 old school slayer knows the water and fished moss to hmb also Capt Khanh with northcalsportfishing.com and captkhanhtacklebox.com 510-552-2250 i'd book with either, Khanh is probably easier to get a hold of
This is a GREAT start. Thanks for the leads, will call tomorrow. Some info FYI; Half Moon Bay sportfishing has a 6-pack called Que Sare Sare. She’s a 38 foot sportfisher with twin Cummings. 3/4 day is $1200. A tad steep IMO, (for simple rockfish) but still within reason. I found one person who has experience with the boat. Good fast boat with a crew of 2; Skip and Hand. They said the skipper got very anxious and somewhat demanding when a customer had a fish on. Their opinion was that he should have “better bedside manners”. He put them on rock fish and they limited early and went in early, BUT the catch were all barely legals.
Our group is 5 people. Called Capt Khanh, he would only take 4. BUT, Tom Joseph of fishonsportfishing agreed to take 5 even though he usually limits at 4. The price is right too; $750 for the day, includes bait and tackle. We buy licenses and bring food & drinks. Could have gone with Que Sara Sara, but they want $1200.
