I was on the Vagabond last weekend (fished on Saturday). There were schools of bluefin crashing on the surface at Colonet. We saw them for most of the day, while we were catching yellowtail with yo-yo jigs. Radio report from the Pacific Queen was that one of their fishermen had hooked one on a yo-yo jig, on 50 lbs, but broke it off. Our captain thought that they were 40 to 60 lb fish, and feeding on red crab, and that they probably wouldn't bite for us. None of the boats down there specifically targeted them, which was kind of frustrating!

They should try 12 to 15lb with the sardines. If the fish were around 40lbs. We did it on the freedom at Cortez in the 80's. Soaking squid 100' back. Fish come thru 30 guys bit, 1, 2, 3 or none to the boat. Try it again. Combat fishing. One time 40lb tail was JP. We did this on 80's tackle. Larry my brother in law on a 20lb Fenwick inshore and shimano 10x baitcaster landed on 12lb a 35 lb bluefin.
I guess because people don't carry light anchovie gear they don't have the ability to keep stepping down gear to sporting level.

I'm remember this too... it was a good day if they would bite 20lb. Squiders and jig masters with Newell bars and spools. Big time was a tiburon frame.
