Does anyone fish the tranx 500 with 40 lb mono top shot of 100 yards with spectra backing, or does the reel need to be fished with mostly braid and 5-foot mono leader? I will be using it for a throwing iron on a 9 foot rod. Trying to decide between the trinidad 20a and tranx 500. Thanks.

You'll seriously reduce your line capacity. I filled mine with 80# Maxquatro getting 330 yards. With it's cast control feature there's no need for mono. The level wind feature will give you more options as to whether you cast and grind, or throw stickbaits & poppers. jmho

That is the setup I have been using on my Tranx 500 and it works fantastic. Have caught lots of yellowtail and 15-25lb tuna casting surface iron. Added bonus of the stretch of the mono and easier to cast/more forgiving than the braid. Also pull less hooks with a bit of stretch. Plus its easy to change out the top shot. Not too worried about capacity. If you hook a really large fish on that reel, I don't know that the 100 yard top shot is going to make that much difference, and you could go with max quatro for the backing to get on extra line

I fish mine filled with 65lb solid braid. If I were to do it again I’d probably fill it most of the way with 50-60lb hollow braid with a 100yard top of 80-100lb braid to a short leader.

I’ve got mine spooled with 50 lb solid izor spliced to 100 yds of 135 hollow. Much easier to cast and pick out backlashes too. Short flouro top shot.

I have both and filled them with 80 Maxcuatro. I use about a 8' piece of either 40 or 50 lb mono. They are mounted on a US90 and US100 Monster. The Tranx500HG casting is incredibly easy vs the Trini20 which needs a little more feel to control.
