My triple axle trailer is sitting in my storage and I’ve considered renting it out in the past to help offset my storage unit.

Has anyone done this? What did you do? Obviously driver insurance is mandatory, likely additional insured. Tow vehicle, license are obvious, but what about the contract and collateral? How would incidentals be covered?

Thanks in advance!

Curious to know others opinion, I have to pay $160 a month to store mine it is really annoying. I pay to slip the boat too. It's super handy having a trailer though.

sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Disasters are bad but volunteering for them is worse

Check with your insurance carrier first to see if it’s even allowed or you could incur all the financial and possible personal liabilities.

Your trailer bearings burn or break apart for whatever reason, tire comes off, boat falls off the trailer while on the freeway or makes a turn and drops onto some vehicle with people getting hurt or worse as one of many examples.

The trailer is insured through the tow vehicle.

Same boat. And no better way to guarantee you’ll need it than to sell it

Yes do you plan to add the other persons boat on the insurance policy?

Should there be an incident with the other person’s boat while on your trailer, boat gets damaged, who files the claim or will a claim be covered?

Or boat survives, trailer gets damaged, same thing, who’s responsible, who files a claim?

Boat and trailer gets stolen, who’s going to file the claim?

Again, contact your insurance agent in writing only (NO phone calls) and ask if you’re allowed to rent out your trailer. If they say “yes” (it’s in writing), go for it if not, keep the trailer parked in storage.

It only takes one event and the income was not worth the effort to let someone use the trailer.

If you’re allowed to rent it out, lawyer up on a good rental agreement.

Gentlemen’s agreement don’t always work well in a court case.

Another thing to consider which I haven't seen in this post. The boat bunks. They fit the vessel you have now, but what about the vessel that you're renting it out for.?

Juice isn't worth the squeeze on this one..........

FYI, in California, GVWR for trailers in excess of 10,000 for bumper pull/receiver require a Class A or Class B license. Your standard Class C license is good to 9,999 lbs bumper pull/receiver.

    3 axles x 3,500lbs capacity (5 lug)= 10,500 lbs = exceeds Class C license

    3 axles x 5,200lbs capacity (6 lug) = 15,600 lbs = exceed Class C license

Out of class violation fine is significant with asset impound. Accident when a party is out of class will be at fault irregardless of who is "truly" at fault. Insurance will not cover an accident when an out of class license situation is present.

The law is very specific related to GVWR so even if a triple axle trailer is empty running down the road and they have a Class C, they are in violation and subject to fine and impound.

Lastly, in CA, annual wide load permit required when width 8'7" to 9'11. Daily wide load permit require (with limited travel times and pilot car depending on width and route) when width exceeds 10'.

I've been in the unfortunate position to learn the hard way on this issue. Your risk tolerance may be different than mine......

I've seen several 'Looking for someone to ship a boat' threads in these forums.
Evidently there are companies who deliver boats.
Some of those boats have trailers, others do not.
Maybe there is a market for leasing your trailer to a boat moving company.

Problem with me (or anyone else for that matter) towing a boat for them is it makes you a for hire motor carrier. Now, you’re really breaking laws-bit inspections, schedule drug testing, upon others.

Most of the problems stated here *seem* to be fairly easy to work around. Boat falls off trailer, it’s on the tow vehicle.

GVWR is a valid concern. Though, insurance should still pay, even if an insured (the driver) was exceeded their license, I believe insurance would still pay (they pay when their insured is at fault for drunk driving or speeding). Obviously, due diligence at the time of pickup would ultimately be the best as would an acknowledgment of wide load permits.

I’ve briefly reached out to my insurance in the past regarding letting someone borrow the trailer and I was told it insured through the driver-a fair bit different than renting it as it may become a commercial policy.

I think the juice is in the contract. Was just wondering if anyone had been down this road with firsthand experience.

This is for actually for Vipertom in post # 2.Why don't you just have the Boat hoist in Redondo to lift it and keep it on the hoist in the parking lot and change it while it's in the sling. They will do it for hang time and not that expensive, actually it's cheap. You would need to it during the week when the weather is not so good, wind, chance rain, etc. It should only take you 20 minutes to do if you have everything ready to go. They probably would charge you some where around $50 for an hour of hang time. Call the hoist or talk to the marina office.

Similar to renting out a car on turo or similar car sharing platforms. Just make sure your insurance covers the trailer. Usually the wear and tear is covered by the renter not the rentee. So you’d be responsible for axles, bunks, brakes and tires unless otherwise contracted. Have them sign a simple rental agreement for any other damage to trailer. You can find rental agreements online pretty easily, just find one, edit it and go for it.
