All the maker of small trucks in Central America have diesels.
We just wont let them sell here. Our loss The Toyota Helix or something like that is a killer workhorse. I was in Chile in the early 80's they had a Chevy love 4 door diesel PU that kicked ass. None could be had here.
US reg's kill it for us.

Nissan already said they're going to use a Cummins V8 in the next couple of years in the Titan.

I hadn't heard about Toyota yet...

Edit: I now see I'm not telling anyone anything new since they mention Nissan in the article.

I'd buy one day one. A 40 mpg truck would be perfect.

I used to get a bunch of those Nissan, Volkswagen and Isuzu Pup/Chevy Luvs back in the mid 1980's, tough sell here, exported almost every one to Central America. Clean air laws and low sales killed them here.

It's the out of warranty repairs on the diesel exhaust treatment equipment that scares the H out of me.

My ex-brother-inlaw worked for Toyota in Newport Beach, he sold the vehicles to SoCal dealerships. He once told me that Toyota along with most Japanese made vehicle companies used South and Central America to test their new models. Mostly to work out bugs without the never ending court battles here in the U.S. which cost them too much money. That is why you see so many new cars available there that you do not see here in the states.

Years ago before the crew cabs of the smaller trucks were available here in the states we saw plenty of them in Costa Rica while my wife and I were there.

It drove me nuts seeing little Chevy Colorados like mine in Thailand with diesels in them! I would kill for a diesel in my truck.

My 1994 Peugot 104d in England got 45MPG or better and it had 198,000 miles on it when I bought it in 2002. Drives me nuts.

My Colorado has steadily been getting worse gas mileage over the last few years. It's down to 17MPG. In an inline 5cyl!! Something to do with the valve seats not being properly hardened and I'm just waiting for the head to go. Super bummed. It got an honest 24MPG on the highway when I bought it in 2005. only 97,000 miles on it and it looks brand new. Kills me to see the gas mileage so terrible...

Don't hold your breath. This was talked about a few years ago.

There's a "war on diesel" going on in the U.S. which has hampered efforts from both foreign and domestic production of a 1/2 ton diesel. Dodge is coming out with one for their Ram 1500 line. If memory serves I think it's the Mercedes diesel. Could be wrong though.

My understanding of Toyota or other Jap trucks is that the tax/fee structured for them to import 3/4 ton + trucks to the U.S. is a big jump..............we are protecting the U.S. auto makers to catch up.

No tariff/tax if they build them here. Tundras are built in Texas.
