Fished the Top Gun 80 out of H&M from June 30-July 4. I have to say right out of the gate I was a little disappointed that we were not going into Mexican waters... but I figured, hey... they know what they're doing. We fished the back side of San Clemente (Tanner and Cortez, I think) and saw a LOT of fish. Bluefin jumping out of the water, and we landed one the first day (I think it was 65-70 lbs). We managed 2 more 30 lb models that day.

Next day, same area I believe, we got a few big bonies on the troll. I think we got a small yellowfin that day, too. Nothing else.

Last day we went down south and fished 10 miles or so west of the South Island and saw more fish jumping out of the water. Bigger bluefin and smaller yellowfin. We managed a few of the yellowfin and a Mako shark.

Very disappointing trip for me. Especially for my first multi-day trip. The crew worked very hard, and never gave up the search. Kept putting us on the fish, but they would not play. There is a lot of bait in the water and they seem content to chase it right now.

I got a bonito on the troll, another throwing a jig, and a football yellowfin on a colt sniper. Took home those 3 and 3 other bonies folks didn't want. My wife is Filipina and she and her friends love fresh bonito. Hell if you haven't had it smoked or sashimi with a dash of lime and soy sauce... you're missing out. It's good.

Wish I would have done better and had some better news for you, but that's fishing. I figure in a month or so that bait will be gone... and there wil be bigger fish looking for food. At least that's my hope.

It's called fishing not catching you should appreciate your time on the water. If the fishing was good down south you would have been there. Do you really think they wanted to take you on a boat ride? Remember their job is to CATCH fish so the probably put you in the area that you had the best chance. Or you could BUY A BOAT AND TAKE YOUR SELF to Mexico if you think you could find them better

Thanks for the report. Those bonies properly handled are such great meat...properly handled. Glad your pinoy knows how to makes lemon-aid out of lemons.

I see you have a boat, so you know the deal. The counts don't match the hype as they did in late May, early June. I hope to catch a 1.75 day trip to fish the Back of SCI, maybe September is a better time - who knows

The guy says he was disappointed with 2 fish in 3.5 days and you answer with this ? And that "it's called fishing, not catching" cliche is gay !

Thank you, sir. I had to reread my post, as I was sure I didn't disparage the boat or the crew, nor did I say our misfortune was their fault.

In fact... I explained our misfortune. The fish are eating plentiful bait. I also said the crew kept putting us in the best position (on the fish) but they would not cooperate.

Obviously this fella can't read. I have a boat, and I do use it A LOT. I'd love to sit down with this guy and discuss fishing over a beer and a cigar. Maybe he can make me a better fisherman, eh?

Thanks for the report. It's nice to have reminders that the fishing isn't exactly like social media makes it look a lot of the time.

Would’ve been cool if the Captain drop the hook or drift for just a couple hours for some lingcod and reds while In Tanner/Cortez. Excellent report.

    Thanks for the report man.
I’m with you on the smoked bonito, it’s great. I do prefer smoked yellowtail but bonito is definitely good too. I hope the schoolie bonito and yellows show up inshore again this year. That’s a ton of fun on bass gear.

Do you have a particular brine for bonito filets? I usually just stick to soy vay(or whatever it’s called) Teriyaki.

A bit harsh here. He did say the crew worked super hard, it's his first semi-long trip. Take it easy.

What's really funny and a bit ironic is that I have a boat, and I fish the Coronado Islands IN MEXICO just about every week during the summer. I have a few reports in that section, too... some good, some not so good. I think information is beneficial to the community, whether it makes me look good or bad.

My first multi-day trip was a Total nightmare lol. Bad crew, bad weather, bad fishing. Boy did that teach me to enjoy the average to good trips that followed. You'll have a better experience next time! Also good job getting a few on board at least.
