Tony Reyes SPECIES ID

Hey y’all, wanted some help identifying a few critters from a Tony Reyes trip in November of last year. All of these fish were released, and a lot of the fish got lost in translation.


#1: Some kind of grouper, but caught in around 8 feet of water. Not a cabrilla.

#2: Pacific porgy? Or another variant of porgy?

#3: No clue, perhaps some type of grunt

#4: Salema is the closest I got on the internet search

#5: Sorry for poor quality, pulled from a go pro. Looked like a juvenile cabrilla but with prominent vertical stripes and some green/purple color

#6: Same thing but different color variation, similar to cabrilla but this time with brighter vertical stripes

#7: Some type of pargo? Maybe juvenile barred?

Curious to hear what you all think. Hope this post is allowed!

#7 looks like a gray-barred Grunt

Don't know what it is, but #2 is not a barred pargo. It does look porgy like...

#3 and #7 seem spot on, think you’re likely correct in the juvenile starry grouper (cabrilla piedrera) category too.

Thank you all for your help, seems spot on! I think I am just looking for answers on #4. I know it’s not a salema, I had that one mixed up with #3.

#5 and #6 are Pacific Grasby, essentially a grouper but on the smaller side. Very common see at lot of them diving around BDLA.

Also known as damsel bass.l'v caught them in 350-450' while targeting baquetas.very tasty.the locals call them antenna fish.
