To all the women of BD on this, St Valentine’s Day 2008

In a world (OK, website) seemingly run by men, we need to (OK, have to) take this day to recognize you, the women of Bloodydecks.
    But first some history…………..

The customs of Valentine's Day "have been handed down from the Roman festival of the Lupercalia, celebrated in the month of February, when the names of young women were put into a box and drawn out by men as chance directed." This is the origin of Valentines Day - cards linking men and women together for sexual purposes.

Valentine's Day became popular around the 17th century in Great Britain.By the middle of the 18th century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged.

Esther A. Howland, of Worcester, Massachusetts, became one of the first U.S.A. manufacturers of valentine cards. In 1847 after seeing a British valentine card, she decided to make some of her own. She then hired a staff of young women and set up an assembly line to produce the cards. Many valentines of the 1800’s were hand painted. Some featured a fat cupid or showed arrows piercing a heart. Many cards had satin, ribbon, lace, dried flowers, feathers, imitation jewels, mother-of-pearl, sea shells. Some of those cards cost as much as $10. A small price to pay for love…

Fast forward 2008. What do the women of BD mean to us?

They may be here on a daily basis. Posting reports, recipes, half naked pics of men, (Still think she should have been banned for a month). They even might be mixing it up with the boys with a little friendly give and take. Or just starving for attention, remember “Bump?” After all, they did take the time to learn how to fish, launch a kayak by themselves or even looked hard enough to find themselves a man here, Zach?

Or they might be the ones at home who don’t even post. They wait for you to get home from fishing so you can finish your chores around the house. They look over your shoulder when you’re reading BD just to see what you’re laughing at and then yell at you ‘cause it’s the BOTD. They tolerate a boat in the driveway, when the family Minivan is parked out on the street instead. They put up with all your goofy fishing buddy’s, guys named G-Spot, Cooter and WaaTooSee. (What the hell is a WaaTooSee anyways?) They don’t understand why you need all those fishing rods, but they still let you get up at 0330 to go a swap meet out in the middle of nowhere to go buy more. “WTF, why does the trash stink like dead fish??” is heard coming from them on more than one occasion during the summer months. But come July, as long as there is something fresh cooking on the BBQ, they don’t seem to mind too much, eh boys??

So to Rox, Kristie, Maggs, Crystal, JShaw, Taz, The Arab’s Wife, Nancy, Opie, Gayle, Steph, Viv, Martha, Kimber, Dana, Christy, Annie, Shelly, Ramona, Ginny, Debra and all the other girls of Bloodydecks, have a good Valentine’s Day, you’ve earned it!!!!

hey, BG,..you know women are suckers for stories of love, heres one about Valentines day they'll like:

The date of this Saint Valentine's birth is not known. Along with Saint Marius and his family, Saint Valentine assisted the martyrs during the persecution they suffered under the rule of Claudius II (also known as Claudius the Goth and Claudius the Cruel). In addition, since Rome was at the time involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns, the emperor found it difficult to recruit the male populace into joining his military leagues. Believing this to be because Roman men were adverse to leaving their loved ones or their familes, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements within the City of Rome. Saint Valentine and Saint Marius, however, continued to perform wedding ceremonies in secret. When is was discovered that Saint Valentine was defying the emperor's decree, he was apprehended and dispatched by Claudius to the Prefect of Rome who, being unable to force the saint to renounce Christianity, ordered that Valentine be clubbed, stoned and then beheaded. According to tradition, while Valentine waited in prison for his execution, he corresponded with those under his care by sending letters and love notes to his parishioners. It is also believed that while incarcerated, the Bishop fell in love with a young woman who visited him during his confinement. According to some sources, this was the blind daughter (whose name may have been Julia) of of Asterius, the jailer. It is said tht God enabled Valentine to miraculously restore the girl's sight. Popular belief indicates that Valentine's farewell message to his love contained a closing that has now transcended time: "From Your Valentine." The saint was executed on February 14 in either 269 A.D. or 270 A.D. In 270 A.D., Pope Julius I is said to have built a church near Ponte Mole in the saint's memory at a location once known as Porta Valentini and now called Porta del Popolo. The relic bones of this Saint Valentine, who may also have been a physician, are now housed within the Church of Saint Praxed in Rome.
