It stiffens up the reel and usually gives you better freespool. It makes a stronger reel.

Yeah, it holds the side plates in better alignments than the posts and stamped seat. Better alignment and added rigidity helps.

Topless frame makes for easy access to manage fly lined baits or pick at backlash.

IMHO:

Pros (if you already have an Old Penn):
  • better alignment
  • 1pc makes the reel stronger with no frame flex
Cons:
  • Heavier
  • If kitted with spool, the reel becomes heavier due to billet construction of spool and frame.
  • Can get costly with spool & frame together.
  • just the frame? mehhhh... it becomes addicting and you'll wanna keep upgrading and... *Read Below...
at the end, it's up to you whether you want to put the $$ into an old reel OR with today's new technology, the money can go towards a brand new reel...

a classic example would be spending the $$ to upgrade a Senator 113 or just buy a nice slightly used Penn Baja Spcl (Penn Senator 113HN), or investing in soupin' up your 500.

some like having a "Trix Souped Up Old Skool Reels". if that's your cup o' tea, go for it! it can get expensive by adding S/S guts, 5 stax drags, 1pc frame, spectra, Tib Handle, bla bla bla...

but once completed, there's a degree of a "Cool Factor" involved...8-)8-):git:

here's another link to just what you're asking.

You can upgrade a Squidder/Jigmaster/113h until the only thing that’s original is the name… and spending more than it would cost to buy a better 2-speed! Check out what the frame/spool, gear sleeve, gears, drags, bridge, bearings, handle, etc, costs! Yeah, you don’t have to do it all at once, or even at all, but afterwards you still have a souped up archaic piece of tech. I did get comments on the handle of the tanked 4/0 I had on my last 8 day! My Jigmaster has been narrowed to 99 width with a Tib frame/spool and has a cool handle but still…

They make the reel stronger and prevent any twisting or flexing but the main reason is that they come in different colors and look cool. The Accurate and Tib frames come in red, gold, green, purple, blue etc. and really dress up a plain jane stock reel. Add some Accurate side plates and a fancy handle and you have something really neat to look at.
I have 15 or 20 Penn reels with Accurate or Tib frames and they sit in a display case in my office. I used to use my 146 squidder with an accurate frame, Newell spool and 500 handle quite a bit but even that now sits in a display case. With the new small light weight 2 speed reels being made today the older stuff doesn't get used very much. It is kind of like driving around town in your custom 55 Chevy.
