thinking of getting a flat fall reel for bluefin trying to decide between a tiagra 30 or a penn visx 20? Any thoughts. weight doesn’t bother me yet so that a non issue. Normally a Shimano fan but have heard great things about the penns

I would go with either thr Penn 16 or 20 VISX or the Mak 16 or 20sea. Both are much better options

The Penn’s lightweight spool (which gives it excellent abilities to flyline a bait) opens up more options. The Makaira is it’s equal in most catagories and either of those would be my choice. The Tiagra is a good trolling reel and would work as well for the flatfall. It mostly depends on your needs.

I have all three brands of reels. I use Tiagras for marlin trolling, the others for stand up fishing on LR boats

Not even a fair to put these 2 in the same category. Go with the VISX and call it a day.

I have a tiagra 30 upgraded that has landed yft to around 150lbs. But not with the most recent upgrades. I will be using the reel for flatfall if that situation presents itself

Without a doubt. I would prefer the topless penn. For sure
