Didn't get underway until 9a from Dana Landing.. worked the night shift wed and pulled another 3/4 day after work - who needs sleep life's made to LIVE, right?.. Weather wasn't as bad as forecast, there was windswell but surface winds were ok as long as I kept it 12-15 knots in the Montauk. Spotting kelps was actually pretty easy with all the swell... sometimes that's the hard part of fishing from a small skiff - visibility. Was looking for nearshore YT I had heard about off mission beach/LJ just lots of birds working a huge spot of dolphin.. not sure what they were on. Looked like smaller baits maybe chovies or small sardines. Decided to head toward the upper 9 and about 7 miles out from mission beach spotted a barndoor sized paddy with birds on it looked so fishy. Worked it with various jigs and had a few YT followers but unfortunately no takers I saved the $$ on bait maybe they'd have taken a live one. Jumped in with my spear to shoot them made 2 passes on the quick drift with the winds, didn't spot them. Vis wasn't great only 10ft on surface, murk down at 15' was thick and yellow/brown, surface water is quite green out to about the 9. Got out after those passes tried the troll and spotted what I thought was a fairly large Mako. Was kind of sweaty with palpitations thinking there was a mako right where I was just swimming :) Rolled up close and was surprised it was actually a Marlin, had to be 8' with bill and all I don't know these fish size wise at all but tail fin was THICK. I'm thinking at least 300#. It was not interested in my rapalas or jigs. I didn't have anywhere close to the spear power to take it down no flying gaff, etc so I just enjoyed the sight. Tried to get gopro vid but the SD card was full :(

Any recommendations on gear/setups for fishing for those? Will they take macs on flyline? Anyone ever speared one? Is it even worth it? Do they taste good at all?

Stopped on one more paddy frontside of the 9 had rat YT wouldn't bite and wouldn't get close enough to shoot. I shot a halfmoon for my dog she was pumped :) Hope you guys get 'em this weekend bless you all stay safe-

I have passed on shooting large marlin in the past. I have had it smoked, not great, not bad, but not good compared to other smoked fish. The other part is the potential ass kicking you would receive after shooting it. Jack Prodanovich used to say "shooting them is the easy part (about BSB), they are as big as a house, you can't miss!" Being in the water with a seriously pissed off 300# fish with a bill is hanging it out there. However, many have done this, and do it. Look in Terry Maas's books, bluewater hunting and freediving, for starters. Here is some marlin spearing porn for you

You are better off in the water with an 8 ft mako than an 8 ft swordfish. Swordfish have an attitude. I have no problem with a big mako next to the boat. A swordfish will attack the boat (if hooked). The bill is like a sword, not a spear. It is capable doing much damage.

Ya that’s old purple fever for sure and good luck trying to get him to bite up top he is usually only up top to 💩on ur hopes and dreams . Big Mac is ur best bet on at least a 16 size reel. But sounds like us deep drop guys should give it a go early season swording.

A few years ago off Hawaii some spearfishing dumbass jumped in on a swordfish and shot it from behind as their eyes are locked in their head as can't see to the rear; the sword turned around and gored him and they both died. Big Makos will dine on swordfish if they get the chance, however their first bite is to sever the tail so the swordy can't turn and attack them. They are one mean fish. While marlin fishing I've watched several get harpooned and they frequently turn around and attack the bow of the boat before taking off.

I had a friend who speared one. But it charged him after he shot it and got his fins good. Makos are suppoevly much more aggresive then great whites.

Big live mack with a 7/0 circle hook on 130lb floro, to heavy braid and a reel with smooth drag and could probably land that swordfish.

After catching one last year I have alotof respect for that fish based on the massive head and sword like rostrum. One head shake may cut you in half, or at least halfway. I put a bucket by the bill as it sat on the driveway as I was afraid someone would impale themselves. After going to a seminar on deep dropping and seeing video of the fish attacking the boat, my strategy was to keep the fish away from the boat as I was afraid of it puncturing the skin of my aluminum boat. Only got it close when it was turning belly up.
