Cowcod are still illegal to take. The change is only to the depth you are allowed to fish. Before you could fish in 360 feet or less, now 300 feet or less. They changed it because too many Cowcod are being hooked (in their opinion).

I think it's about time we recreational anglers ask our our elected politicians, sporting publications, fishing related foundations, fishing equipment and clothing manufacturers et al to come together with a single unified voice calling for and using political capital for legislation confirming a anglers bill of rights.

The recreational and sportboat angler are paying the frieght on both sides of these regulations. We pay state license fees that are used to furthur restrict us, and we pay for representation to fight against these restrictions in the form of donations to foundations who burn OUR political and financial capital on nonsense that does nothing to protect our right to fish.

    ANGLERS BILL OF RIGHTS

    1. No law or regulation shall be changed or implemented without prior review and majority consent from a duely created citizen-angler review panel.....

So basically we all need to prep our kids for a degree in Marine Science or Marine Biology at UC Santa Barbara or Long Beach State so we have someone on our side in the future. Great way to wake up on a Saturday morning, to find out that my tax dollars and license fees are once again working against me, and I had no say in the matter. f-king Libtards.

The Pacific Fishery Management Council is made up of 14 voting representatives from Oregon, Washington, California, and Idaho; many advisory bodies; and 16 staff members located in Portland, Oregon.

I love how "16 staff members in Oregon" decide it would be best to take away 60 feet of water away to save a cod. I am sure the science behind this is overwhelming.

This sucks. Ok, I think I remember seeing that MPAs took away about 15% of the coast for fishing. So, with this added restriction we have:
Remaining fraction of southern coast for rockfishing ~ (100-15)/100*(300/360)=0.7 = 70%. In the last year we just lost 30% of our available fishing area.

A few years ago I was on a charter to SCI and we caught 3 or 4 cowcods in about 30 fathoms. The captain cut the lines when they came to color, wouldn't let them on the boat. He said for an "overfished" species, there were definitely a sh$t load of them, especially in shallow water, since they are more of a deep water fish. Another way for the DFG to f-us.

Can the commercial guys still fish deep? Or are they pushed into our ever shrinking rocks?

You know, there is an easy solution to turn DFG on our side. Here is my proposal when it comes to DFG license fee and their funding from general state fund.

Allow for inflation increase as indicated by the Fed's inflation index for the year. But, both license fee and funding from general state fund should be reduce by the percentage of the area now closed to fishing activity. So, if we they close 15% of the area/depth from fishing, their budget should be reduce by 15%.

If we can get this to pass, DFG will fight real hard to keep area open to fishing for us.
