Recently I fished a very prominent boat for 3 days. I am geared up for big fish and expect to fish at night. For some unknown reason, we only ran a scratch bite for yellowfin and never fished in the dark. It’s not what I pay for. I can do a one day trip and catch the yellowfin. This boat fishes long range so it’s not a bait issue. Top of the line boat & crew and therefore I will not name the boat. For the money, I am disappointed. I hope they read BD posts. I want a 200 pounder / not 30. If it happens again, I will name the boat and spend money elsewhere.

Sounds like poor trip management more than anything else, crew needs to monitor what's going on with the bait and adjust.

When you reserve your spot. Has anybody thought to ask if the boat fishes at night?
Or is cool to be expected to sleep all night?

A few years ago I was getting ready for A two day trip, and had flat falls and Ahi jigs
All set up with leaders and all , I spent close to $300 on it all, the first night we A few drifts for nothing, then during the day we
We went through A lot of bait ,
So we went back to get rebaited ,
And never really had the chance to use them, things change and you have to deal with the hand you’re dealt with,
There will always be be things that nobody can control, it was what it was.

Night bite’s been on/off since early September. Last week or so numerous fleet leaders couldn’t catch a single fish in the dark… maybe your captain knew the deal and was just letting you sleep?

If I’m planning to fish bft, I make sure to book on a boat that specializes in that fishery. Polaris Supreme, Pacific Queen, NLA would be my first three choices. If these three are full, the Pacifica and Legend are next up.

BFT fishing is an expensive game, plan out everything ahead of time. Study moon phases, past fish counts by month, etc.

Every season and every trip is different. I do quite a few 3 day trips starting in late May through September. I have seen plenty of night bites on bigger grade fish eating the jigs and have seen kite fishing on big ones so good we went though the rotation almost twice on one drift.

That said, this year was different. 4 trips and only saw the kite deployed a couple of times with limited success. Fished jigs at night frequently but never on that bigger grade of fish. This last 3 day that I did a few weeks ago the grade of fish was mostly 40lbers and those fish bit sardines better during the day than jigs at night. It was the first time I remembered of just shutting the boat down at midnight and drifting while sleeping until first light when we went of the hunt for day time sonar schools of fish.

Saw very few 200lb fish this year landed either on the kite or on jigs at night. That grade was just not around in any significant numbers for whatever reason.

Like I said, every trip is different and you just make the most of the opportunities you are given...day or night.
