I wanted to fish my sled tomorrow or Monday but the usual suspects had lame ass family or work excuses, so I’ll post a fish report from my last trip and can another batch of tuna instead.
Fished with my neighbor on 1-9 in 59 degree water, smooth seas and not much current. We fished everything from the 7 minute wreck to Izor’s. Fishing was a tough pick that mostly gave up doubles on the double trouble rig. We tried every color in the playbook, but once again they wanted the Kman Specials.
We caught as many bycatch as bass with a 23.5” ling in the mix. It’s been a while since I caught a ling at the shoe. We stayed till 3:30 hoping an afternoon bite would materialize. It didn’t.
Don’t remember the totals, but it was nothing to write home about. At least we didn’t sink the boat or get arrested or towed. It was a great day on the water.
Now the 1000 pounds of tuna…. There was a thread on the long range board a while back about what to do with excess tuna. I suggested donating it to me as I’d had a crappy private boat tuna season and would find LOTS of homes for the meat among my compadres. I am set up to process hundreds of pounds and can bring in others if need be. Well, I got a PM from a long ranger offering to give me his whole catch which I accepted along with prodigious thank yous. You know who you are and THANK YOU again!
We met the boat at the dock and picked up over a thousand pounds of YFT and hoo and our two cutting crews went to work. My crew (Steve, Dr Bob, me) cut and bagged for 6 hours. We filled some 300 vacuum bags. The other crew (anchored by Taxfree Rich) did the same. Most of the meat has already been given away and has been enjoyed by at least 50 people so far.
For perspective, that’s a 150 quart ice chest.
Tuna bellies!
