The California Boater Card requirement is here. $35 and you have to sit there for hours while the little clock ticks down, and then an additional $10 to send your paperwork to Sacramento, so they can issue your Boaters Card. I heard somewhere that your BOAT U.S. subscription will get you the course, gratis. This card must be on the boat or your person under penalty of law. Is it not wonderful, are you not entertained..... I do not need the card because I am as old as dirt, but I took the test and got a card out of curiosity and winter boredom. I was surprised, but I missed a question on a Western River Buoy.

Yes, Boat US has the course for free but you still have to pay the $10 for filing.

I'm somewhere in the later group to need it, but I went ahead and got it anyways.

I hate new taxes of any kind, I do think it might take some idiots off of the water for a minute.

did you take the test in person? I have BoatUS and thought you could do it online? This is going to be an issue as I sometimes have buddies drive the boat while I rig stuff and if they're going to be expected to have a boater card, not a chance they're taking in-person tests.

Honestly, I doubt it, especially since the biggest idiots are paddle boarders and rental boat operators, both of which (I believe) are exempt. The better solution would be to require insurance. Then insurers can price the premium accordingly, and if courses make a difference, they will require / discount for those courses. As it is, just more buracracy and paperwork that LEO has to contend with when their time could be better spent (not to mention our tax dollars). It fundamentally depends on whether you have faith that the government can solve problems without creating bigger problems. Personally, I have more faith in competition borne of capitalism and the free market system -- not coincidentally, both of which these government programs are immune to, by design. Just like congress is immune to obummer care. There ought to be a law that these programs can only last a few years without renewal. But the lazzy asses that get elected would just renew everything in mass. That's why smaller government (or rather, government at the local level) is generally better -- easier to have a voice and to vote the idiots out.

Is it just the operator of the boat who has to have it?

Online. If you take online tests regularly (I have to for my profession) you can kill it in about an hour. If you sit and go through every module, figure 3 hours.

Yep, you're right. Any idiot can go rent a boat or jet ski without any knowledge of navigational rules. They don't need a card. This is nothing but a money grab, and we'll all still be dodging idiot jet skiers who cut in front of us and stop.

This was announced well over a year ago. Has anything changed? Just curious as to why it was brought up today?

I've got another 6 years and see no reason to give them my money any sooner. How is it some dipstick that rents a boat doesn't need the card but those of us that have experience on the water need it.Nevermind,it's about the money.

It’s just an excuse for the money-grubbing busy-bodies to hassle / fine people. Won’t “solve” any problems.

May want to believe its going to help stupidity, but the rental exemption just kills me. Just more regulation based on that carve out.

So the people who have the absolute least experience don’t need a course?!?!?!?!

DP is my home port, renta-boats and wave runners are the wildest. 1st time tourists who have never seen the ocean in their lives doing 50 plus.

All you have to do is print it. The $10 is for the actual card. There is no filing that I read.

Not sure, but that would make sense, so probably not.
