Something to think about. it seems that 5-7 day trips are some of most expensive trips out there and with the Lupe iff’y at best, they sometimes just turning into long 3 day trips. You don’t have the time to go much further that the rocks or ridge and you show up with a few other boats there and the area has been pounded by trolling.
So I ride the longer trips 14+ because they are just a better value. We have been fishing the Jan 1 16 day (which is really a 17 day jan 1 - 18) it is like $350 a day. There will be a fuel surcharge, etc. But calculate how much enjoyment are you really getting for the cost per day. Some boats have a 8-day for $4400 and our 17 day is $5600. But the key is we have the time to go anywhere, we can spend 10 days at Hurricane bank or go to puerto vallarta or anywhere in between. Now this year I got a #340 and a #261 on bait, my son takes all the kite rotations and he usually gets fish 125-175. One of the questions that everyone gets asked on board is “did you bring your plastics” we spend at least 1 1/2 days fishing for calico bass, ling cod and rock fish. Usually at least 1/2 a day at the rocks etc.
The key thing is the cost of taking off of work, getting all your gear ready and being on a expensive long 3 day trip with a bunch of other fishing pressure because of closures, the longer trips are the hidden gem.
The bank has tons of 60-90 fish all day long, if you just have the expectation to just go catch fish and not worry about catching a super cow, these trips are awesome. Plus the bank fish bite all night long, most anglers are just too tired from fishing them. Wahoo are all around the boat and we were using #20 test, small sliding weights and sardines. The bank has a bunch of #15 Rainbow Runners, which are like yellowtail. Then out of 25 anglers, there are really 18 anglers fishing at a time and everyone has a little different grove. My and my son are “man” bait fisherman, others just wait for their kite rotation, there are the sinker fisherman, the flat fall dudes, the sardine dudes, the mack fisherman and another 3 or 4 guys that never seem to fish at all. They are in the galley eating, telling stories, then they get their coffee and sit on the top deck watching the kites with the crew. It seems like theres always one dude who is always working on his tan and the one dude who seems like they are re-rigging all the time (that is me testing all the new ideas I have) etc.
So each year the first day we leave the first stop is off of ensanada to see if we can get some of the big bluefin because the boat traffic is way down and we are usually fishing alongside the commercial fleet. Now with the improvement of all the new reels, my “go-to” sardine reel is the Avet HXW loaded with #100 spectra and I fish fluoro wind-on leaders, etc. Most of the 5 day fisherman have the gear to fish the Long Trips and really don’t realize it. The boat has kite rods and there are some things you will not be prepared for, but there is 3 1/2 days of travel and on our trip everyone helps each other out. The galley always has dudes rigging all different kinds of stuff up and a crewmen is at table 1 all day to set you up. Me and my kids are experts at making wind-on leaders , so we typically teach people all about it if they want.
Lastly you get to relax, this is not a aggressive competitive environment, if you are new on this trip, most likely you will catch a fish bigger than me because of beginners luck 🍀. The water is like 82 degrees and the air also, so it is easy to relax. There are probably 2 dudes throwing iron for wahoo most of the day. We encourage everyone to try something a little different, it seems that there is something at the bank that will work well and it may be a chandelier rig with a sinker or a big bait, etc, so the more fisherman we have doing different things the greater success we have. Many times anglers will just sit on the upper deck and see what is working before they jump in. This is what fishing is all about, now jumping on a 1 1/2 trip when the bluefin are eating paint, that’s kool. But scheduling a trip in advance, getting off of work, getting all your gear together, then barely being able to get to the wahoo grounds and then someone else always gets the wahoo on the troll, it is just frustrating. Life is hard enough as it is. We have had many trolls that are “virgins” only, then we are down to the last dude with all 4 outfits and cheer him on. There anglers on this board and a few tackle shops that will help you out. The key thing is get advise from someone who makes these trips, I have many anglers call me and they are surprised to find out that they are very close to the gear they need for a long trip. You can always buy used gear , just get it serviced to make sure it is sano. I am changing my color scheme of my custom rods and will be selling a bunch of the custom ones I have now. I have a 50TW , 50T 2 speeded and blueprinted by calsheets that have freespoolers and you can fish sardines with them and the kite full of JB hollow that work awesome (just cosmetically 5/10). So I like to focus on the fishing “experience” and enjoyment more than anything else. Interesting note, I talked to a angler who was on a boat next to us when we were at the bank and when we got back he asked how we did on the big tuna at night in glow lures, they ended up with like 35 fish up to #200 on a night bite… well…none…no one fished much at night. So this next year we will be doing some night fishing, I also bring a set of radios, so if my son is sleeping or me we can call each other if something pops up. It would also be good to team up with another angler and work together on trying some different things. Some of the best things I learned were from other anglers. That is why the people on this trip help each other out, if you become the “Hot Stick” they will appreciate the intel.
    Good Fishing 🎣

These are sage words. I’ve been contemplating the longer trip. Or multiple three day trips.
The Lupe is a treat to fish, and I’ve been there three times with amazaning fishing and some not so great fishing. Having the ability to fish a bigger range of species is awesome and I can totally understand the value behind those extra days.

What about some of the days being just travel days without fishing?

The longest trip I did was a 6 day and I was disappointed that we really only fished for 2 of those 6 days, the first two days and last two days were basically just travel days to go way out to sea. Now those two days of actual fishing were good and I enjoyed those two days, but the two days just slamming “uphill” against the waves going back to San Diego were no fun for me.

I don’t live in CA and rather than drive to San Diego to then take a slow boat ride to go far away, I’d rather do a three day trip, maybe even a back to back trip, where there is some fishing everyday.

Otherwise I could just go to the airport near my house and take a nonstop flight to Hawaii where the deep sea fishing is only a few minute boat ride from the Volcanic slopes.

Rode many 17 day trips to the Hurricane Bank which is a 4 day boat ride from San Diego and another 3 day ride up from Cabo.

Clipperton was basically a 20 day trip, 3 days down to Cabo from San Diego, 14 day trip from there, 3 day ride to the Atoll and 3 day ride back to Cabo then 3 more days from Cabo back to San Diego.

Some of the best fishing I have experienced were on those long trips and very glad I got to experience it.

    No regrets whatsoever...

I really wanna do a 14-16 day trip now.. the longest ive been is a 10 day trip. I'd really like to fish the lower banks and Mag bay abd other spots to fish for cows. I'm pretty sure I have the right gear for these trips too. Anybody have any recomendations as to which month is best to go on one of these long range trips??

You are on a small boat many hundreds of miles from any land. Although the fishing in late summer/early fall can be excellent, you are also vulnerable to hurricanes, which are increasing in number. A really long trip CAN be an outstanding experience. It can also be very physically taxing, and if someone has a medical issue, you are a long way from help. For those who have the time and money and physical capability (I'm down to only one of the three) it is an amazing experience. Personally, I liked the spring months.

I have been going on a 16 day for 3 years-basically since I started west coast fishing and love it. From talking with more experienced fishermen the winter months November thru February tend to be better for cows. The spring better for wahoo but either season has been spectacular for the less plentiful species sometimes.
My first trip which was an 8 day one of the very experienced and somewhat famous fisherman said “ go as long as you can as soon as you can for as long as you can”. So that is what I have done and am very glad.-Russ

Having had multiple opportunities to fish the NW corner of Clarion on the anchor, or Roca Partida for the incredible wahoo fishing, Socorro and San Benedicto and the Hurricane Bank, it is a shame that most of those areas are now off limits to fishing.

Those destinations were the allure of the 16 day trips, or the hybrid 10 day fly down fly back trips from Cabo that developed to fish those destinations with less time away from work/family. It was truly a special time to be a long range angler.

Too bad so much of that has changed from what I experienced not so long ago...

I too have been hesitant to sign up for an ALL Hurricane Bank trip.... with a few outer banks thrown in. Glad I got to do so many long ones.... in the day.

If you are flying in (which means NOT bringing a hundred pounds of tackle) and you want to maximize the fishing time for big tuna, I urge you to check out 3-day and 4-day trips from Puerto Vallarta. Not a long boat ride, maximum fishing time, small cooperative groups on the boats, and you can fly home some fish if you want to. And very competitive pricing to chase really big tuna. Not the same experience as the San Diego boats, some things missing and some things better if your main purpose is to fight big fish.

In the past all the Revillagigedo Islands was the supreme adventure. Each fishing spot had it’s own character and landscape. Unfortunately that play has played out. I am all for long trips and personally like stopping at the rocks for a few hours to break the long trip down. I could go for a catch and release coastal long trip or others too. It is all about the adventure.

Did a 15 day trip in January of this year. Trip was great, fishing OK. Tagged 9 fish, largest about 155lb. Average fish was probably 50lb. Spent the entire trip fishing the Hurricane. Luckily only shared the bank for only 2 days.
I got off the boat and did not reschedule for 2023 and am not planning on going long until everyone can agree on where to fish. During my trip this year, Clarion was “closed” and the lower banks sucked. That leaves the Hurricane Bank as the common fishing target. Now as we all know, only about 2 boats can successfully fish the Hurricane at one time. Are there any real plans to fish other areas like Puerto Vallarta or Mazatlan. It would be nice to know there are fishing choices before signing up for another trip

You concern is well taken and valid. I personally like ride down - ride back trips, because you just get more fishing time. Let’s face it, if we were getting big schools of #25 - 50 pound yellowfin all over the shorter trips then my post wouldn’t be needed. But the fishing has changed in our waters, the bait is small and a huge amount of boat traffic within 150miles off of SD. I just came off a 8-day, two days travel to the ridge, picked up limits of yellowtail for two days (awesome, love yellowtail) then two days travel up north to fish 50 mi off of SD for two days with all the center consoles. That was a great decision by the captain, because that is all there was and each of my daughters caught a #50 tuna by themselves at 2am because I was down with Covid.
Now with that there are Long Range boats I won’t fish and each boat has its own grove and clicks. Interesting there are some trips that are really closed and you have to be “vetted” before you get on the list, like a trip that everyone brings at least 1/2 a gallon of booze and 10 pounds of marinated meat, barbecue’s and bags of briquettes. The boat has to have two rovers to keep a eye on everyone. They put all the booze on one table in the galley and bunji cord them all together the whole trip. These trips are typically all booked up and there is seldom a opening on those trips. There are also long trips where there pretty much there a 7 anglers fishing most of the time because the average age of the anglers is like 70yrs old. They have the crew hold the kite rods and call them in from the galley when they get bit, etc. There are more options than just the Hurricane, there are some “buffer” zones that you may be able to fish as well. Some boats 12/9 ride down , fish all the lower banks, fly back from cabo. or fly down/fly back from Cabo. I personally fish hard and like a boat that has high fish counts, captains that work hard.
Like we were at the bank with two other boats, and at dark we were driving all over the bank catching live flyers (they have extra nets for passengers who want to help) for the kites the next day, the other two boats didn’t move all night. So what happens the next day on the other boats? They claim we caught more fish because we had the “Alpha” spot but the current swings so much at the bank we anchored in different spots each day. We had sharks collecting on us at night so the captain moved us 5 miles offshore at night, then slid us back in at 3am and I think the other boats were having shark problems.
The most fun of the trip was we went to the “Buffer Zone” to get some Mac’s , well a huge squall moved in and it was like a monsoon , not cold , no real wind, just lighting and a massive down pour like I have never seen. So I told my son let’s get our grundens at fish for bait, so the crew member was nailing the bait and all three of us caught like 200 pieces in a hour, we caught the bait for the whole boat. So I am now focused on the adventure and experience of the things I do.

Sounds like the Captains of the Excel. We didn’t have any shark trouble this January but last January they moved us back and forth every night to cut the shark problem. Outstanding captains on that boat.

Yes and they have some openings on some of their Long Trips this next year, it is a good time to jump on now. the RP is usually booked up most of the time. We were able to get on it a few years ago because of covid, now we are first in line to re-book.

    Great write up Guyster!

I do love local day trips on buddies boats and even cattle rides to the Coronados..
I also love the 1.5 day-3 day local BFT type trips..
Love those 5-8 day trips too..
Those PV 3.5-4 day trips kinda rock also...
and 8-10 Day variety trips are the kill.

but I really love the longer trips...
there is something about them that I really dig.
It is hard to explain to everyone and not for all..
But if you know what I mean ...then you know..

It is about the Ocean.. fishing ,friends and more importantly:
    the life experience and memories.
cause it isn't about the things you own and the money you have or haven't made..
It is about Living life to the fullest.

In the bigger scheme, the whole long range fleet is a pretty good deal.
All the boats have good to great food and excellent service. I have been long ranging since the 1980s. Fished all the long range boats except 3, and hope to fish them too. I love all the boats, do 3-4 trips a year. Almost never have an average time, always really good times with nice people with occasional odd balls. This year only 3 trips, 3 day 8 day (my charter on Excel limits 20 passenger) and a 15 day. All trips on different boats, all wonderful. We are all lucky to fish these boats.

A friend of mine summed it up best saying where else can you go and spend 14 days with a group of your friends and all you do is talk about long range fishing. I too like the ride down/back trips because it gives me time to catch up with my buds and meet new people. I've also taken advantage of the ride down by watching and learning from others on knots and spectra connections along with all cool new tuna and wahoo gear. Our CM keeps it all interesting with a big raffle on the way down plus daily give aways on fishing days, then a boat wide card tourney (including crew) on the way back. On the ride down, we play the same card game is smaller groups and pull in any newbies so they are familiar with the game when the tourney starts and it's also a good way for the passengers and crew to get to know each other. There is also a crew only card tourney which is fun for us to watch. Buy in is only $1 per game. Other trips we've had cribbage team tourneys but it seems like less and less people know how to play.

The ride back can be a real bummer if the weather is up but I find it's nice to hit the dock well rested with 3 days of travel. Gives me plenty of time rinse my reels, remove topshots, and let them dry so one less thing to do at home. I still bring a couple books and my laptop to watch movies to help pass the travel time and if the internet gods smile on us, maybe catch a playoff game or 2 on the way home.

in 20 years of fishing the long range fleet 95% of my trips are 5-7 day trips... you get to relax. not a lot of rookies or rude hotheads either. the longer the trip (in my experience) the more I appreciate the other anglers. you get to know each other and learn. i have never been on a longer trip than 10 days... BUT
    1. from what I have heard from crew members is that the Clarion/Bank trips can become insufferable when it comes to the tropical heat. the further south you go the hotter and more humid it becomes. so if you hate the heat you might want to do some research.
    2. my wife is an angel BUT if i tell her im going on a 17 day vacation without her she would shut that shit down immediately. taking 3 weeks to go fishing can be super challenging if you have a family and/or social life.
    3. but overall the long trips are an amazing adventure. fishing is half the fun. the other half is watching all the amazing offshore situations that unfold. shit that non offshore fisherman could ever understand.

Yep, we do have a group with the continual card game going. The ride back is usually fine , they usually cruise around 8 knots during the day and kick it up at night when everyone is sleeping, we have the time no rush.

in 20 years of fishing the long range fleet 95% of my trips are 5-7 day trips... you get to relax. not a lot of rookies or rude hotheads either. the longer the trip (in my experience) the more I appreciate the other anglers. you get to know each other and learn. i have never been on a longer trip than 10 days... BUT

We go in Jan, heat us not that bad. Maybe later trips are hotter, my kids are in college and they all fish long range. Me and my 22 yr old son are on the long trips, every one on the boat tells him he is a very lucky young man (actually some of you know I am really the lucky one), my wife usually goes to Hawaii or is just glad she gets a rest from taking care of me. She can go with her friends or whatever else. It does help to have your life structured a bit to do this, plus All the fishing expenses I have are a business write off, so the $ does not come out of the family budget. RingedHooks.com pays the full bill.

Done 4-7 day trips only so far. I have always learned something new and meet the greatest people. I am doing my first 11 day trip this December and I can hardly wait. I find the whole package rewarding. I like the travel days to make new friends and I love the fishing days to be away from work. I'm lucky in that the wife likes it when I go fishing as it gives her time to be with her boyfriend. So I find it to be a win win. 🤣
