I thought I'd do a quick recap on my build to help those in process, especially since I think I'm finally done adding items. I've learned a ton and found some, "can't live without" items while building her. I hope it helps you, if you are covered in fiberglass night after night and weekend after weekend. It is all worth it in the end, trust me.

Other builds helped me muscle through the year of hard work and it paid off. My wife and I are fishing this boat three to five times a month, at a minimum and enjoy the heck out of it. The fuel mileage is amazing with the outboard and bracket. It makes fishing this thing so economical it is crazy. Not to mention, there are few surprises. Everything works like it should.

The build was here:

https://www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/threads/the-3500-bd-deal.556483/

and here:

https://www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/threads/3500-bd-deal-continued.617526/

Must haves on this build:

  • Enclosed transom. When we had scuppers, self bailing deck and the notched transom, the deck was always wet. Now, bone dry. Bilge comes on only when we take a rare one over the bow or when we are washing blood off of the deck.
  • Storage. I crammed as much storage on this boat as I could handle. From bags mounted to the leaning post, tackle storage in the back and the top cabinets on the tackle storage... I'm to a point in which I have more than enough storage, which is never the case on a small vessel. Sometimes I had to think outside of the box to get that extra little bit of room... those top storage compartments are stainless restaurant steam trays and the saddle bags are off of my old off road touring mountain bike.

20181120_105809.jpg

  • Going big. From the bigger outboard that never goes above 2200 rpm and easily moves the boat with fuel sipping, to the best bait tank I could muster, a new trailer to remove headaches, Simrad, all new wiring, more battery power, trolling motor... it all made it worth it in the end. The boat is a breeze to hook up, use and then put away, which makes it fun.
  • Outboard on a bracket. From what I can tell from the old boat, this prop has very little interference from water movement of the hull and rides much better.
  • Automatic trim tabs. Don't ask, just do. On plane in seconds.
  • On board charging. I can't stress this one enough. I come home, and no matter how much were under power during the trip, the batteries always need charging when plugged in to shore power. Peace of mind is worth $. I also added two automotive type plugs for cell charging. ... and yes, that is my thumb in the photo.

20181120_105316.jpg

  • Towels clipped to the cap. I have six spots, five towels and they get used constantly on the boat.
20181120_105232.jpg

  • Trash bags.. yes, trash storage was my wife's demand and I'll be damned if she wasn't right. So much so that we doubled it up and now have two. Don't tell her, though.
20181120_105247.jpg

  • Bimini top clips for bumpers. So easy. All of my bumpers clip in, locations on both sides of the boat. No more having to tie them up when you come in or go out.
20181120_105403.jpg

  • Doing it myself. After using a few boat guys to do some of the work and never being quite happy with the end result, just rolling up my sleeves and getting dirty was key. From glassing, to weight distribution, parts selection, paint, pulling wires and hooking everything up, cutting 4" holes in the bottom for 'ducers... it was all good. I now know the boat from top to bottom, and on the rare issue, I can fix it quickly. Not to mention the cash I saved.
Thanks to all that helped with answering my dumb questions and thanks to Bottom Line for selling me the rig and helping with even more dumb questions. Finish your project boat, you will be happy when you do!

This is what I'm thankful for on Thanksgiving this year... it is done and we're going fishing.

Tight lines!

Dig the transom work. Did you make the doors and shelves or have them fabricated. They look very nice and organized.

Thanks.

The tackle storage was from Boat Outfitters. They do good work and built many of the boxes on the boat (five or six in total). When they screw up, which they did on a custom box for the battery charger, they fix it and give amazing customer service. Good company.

Love what you've done with the boat Grant!

Unfortunately I've reached the age where I can no longer deal with the back issues that get aggravated operating a small boat so my current boat will most likely be for sale soon - this one is in great shape though...

Buddy, I'm sorry to hear. What is the new sled?

I might have someone for yours when you are ready.

Same boat I had - one year newer than yours. Completely gone through with new deck, 60 gallon fuel and lot's of other goodies...

Looks like we are moving to the mountains in AZ - most likely get a dual console lake boat.
Nice! Enjoy it up there, it is beautiful. Hopefully you can still muster up some salt fishing time.

Not as bad as you might think. Cheaper than a new boat... I checked at one point in the frustration and heat.

The big hits were the motor (previous years model, got it at a massive discount), stainless, trailer and electronics. Nothing was purchased at retail and the labor for almost everything was free.

Wholly crap, that's basically a new boat. Most guys probably don't realize it started from this, nice work! How many man hours you figure?

I know the $ spent. This number I don't want to calculate.

One year solid while working 60+ hour weeks. Every night and weekend for the major build. A few hours here and there for the rest.

I was tired that year.

We will be spending a good amount of time at our place in San Quintin so I'll get some salt time in - also head down to BoLA a few times a year.

Hey it's only money, and there is no price you can put on the satisfaction of doing it yourself and the hours of fun you get from your labor. Just my opinion and I could be wrong, I was wrong once before.

Dam Steve you make it sound like you are retired or something... I know it isn't because your getting older because we are about the same age.... yeah those days of going out back to back days are a little harder... okay impossible. I used to jump right up when working on my truck.... now I'm looking for something I can use to pull myself up... yeah you just got to love this getting older shit. How have you been?

That is dam nice work. What kind of mileage does she deliver?
I was scooting along the other day at about 4000RPM and 19 knts.
It sounds like you get there a much lower RPM.

Old thread... I'm north of 3:1 miles to fuel. I put fuel in about every third trip.

I was going to sell and even listed, but may be keeping after all.

24’ open??? Going outboards or keeping i/o?
24 open. Was thinking about outboards but people I know that have done it report the boat gets more tippy. Had the running gear all rebuilt before I purchased it so it stays as is. Getting a hard top, tower, eyesinglass enclosure, new electronics, radios, radar, etc. Already completed the v-berth and cushions. The bones of the boat are solid. We run the crap out of it as is and have done weekend fishing trips on the boat.

My dad was a State Lifeguard/boat operator, commercial lobster fisherman/sword fisherman, OC Sheriff Harbor Patrolman. He owned a 20’ Open Skippy and a 26’ Seaswirl Striper w a long range diesel. That’s the boat he always wanted and wished he’d have bought. He alsways talked about the 24’ open. Jack Cole built super thick tanks!! That should give you some piece of mind and props on the solid decision. That’s an absolute battleship w a huge rear deck!!
