I know this probably belongs elsewhere but wanted people to get a chance to see it before I moved it. ffice:office" /><?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
Was out with the wife and kids yesterday 7/12 - anchored up off of la jolla shores for a swim then ran up the coast off Black's. Kids had a blast and wife didn't get sick which is always a plus. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
Was headed home for the barn around 5pm up in the tower with my 10 year old daughter when my wife and son yell from below that there was smoke filling the helm and a nasty smell coming from below decks. Quickly came down and was hit with the smell of what I thought wan an electrical fire - problem was I could figure out where it was coming from.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
So I shut down the engines and made the call on 16 that I thought I might have a fire on board. Broke out the life raft, lifejackets and the fire extinguishers and kept trying to figure out where the problem was. Within 2 minutes I had a SD Lifeguard boat and Lee Maio and Papa J on the Heather Lynn II at my stern to assist and offload.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
One of the guards came on board and helped me look for the problem - props here these guys are fantastic - and we began to think it was more mechanical than electrical although we couldn&#8217;t figure it out for sure. After about 15 minutes it seemed like the fumes had died down which gave us enough confidence that it was definitely mechanical and probably the port engine.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
Long story short - no fire - got back on starboard engine without it anymore problems. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
I wanted to post for two reasons:<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
1.) Huge thanks to Lee and Jason for coming to help. I am always scanning 16 for that reason, but when its you that needs the help its good to know that fellow PBs are out there to get your back. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
2.) Am fortunate that it wasn't worse, but its a great wake-up call to make sure you are prepared for the worst. Had it been a serious electrical fire at 2am 40 miles offshore it would have been a very different story. <o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
Thanks again to SD Lifeguards, Lee and Papa J.<o:p></o:p>

Always always always cover your fellow boaters back.

Good stuff and glad it all worked out fine....... not surprising that these two helped though, as they are that kind of people!

Did Lee feed any of you once you were on his boat LOL

Glad we were there to help.

1st and foremost even though everything turned out OK, you did absolutly the right thing by calling into the Coast Guard delacting you may have an emergency with your numbers. If there was a problem they knew exactly where you were.

On a 2nd item, most of us do not monitor 16. Anytime I am at the helm of a boat I always switch the VHF to 16 or at least scan it. And this is the reason why. You never know when it could be you in need of assistance and I would hope when I'm fishing the 1010 guys are listening 16 and not just the "other one". In most cases. the guys fishing around you especially offshore are going to get to you quicker in an emergency faster than the CG.

Remember we are at the start of the season, we all need to be safe out there.

All jokes aside, way to come to the rescue guys. Always a great thing when fellow boaters can help out fellow boaters. Glad to hear you and the family were OK.

Helping each other is HUGE out there. It creates a certain amount of Karma that is unavoidable. Case in point: Years ago when I sold my twin outboard boat and bought the Cabo with CATs I kept the little portable battery charger on board the Cabo. I knew it would never have enough juice to fire off a Diesel but I kept it anyways thinking that one day I will run accross a boater with a dead battery out there and I will save his ass with the charger. A few years later that little charger burried deep inside the boat saved my own ass. A master peko switched disintegrated while offshore in Mexico and killed everything on the boat .... no engines, no electronics.... no nothing. I was able to fire off the genset, plug in the Karma battery charger into the 110 outlet and conect its gator clips to the main bus panel, which fired off one engine and got me back to Coral. Talking about collecting Karma dividents! Godd job on the assist everyone!!!

I will be moving this to the proper forum here in a bit. You can hit "New Post" and see it at the top every time someone responds to it. I'll make sure it stays close to the top for awhile...........cause this is good stuff. Thanks for sharing with us.
