I will update this as I go because this has been kinda overwhelming. I’m taking a day off today to recover.

Day 1 Fishing at Bungsamran (East of Bangkok, Thailand )
    Gear:
Phenix Redeye Travel Series RTX 700-3H / Avet SX Raptor / 50# Braid /80#, 20’ Fluorocarbon Leader
    Stout Rent-rod / Baitrunner 8000 / 50# Braid
Crazy day to say the least. My arms hurt, my hands were blistered in several spots and did not work anymore by end of day.
Over 20 fish caught. Smallest Mekong Catfish was over 50#s and largest went about 120#. (12) Mekongs caught, (6) Siamese Carp, (1) Yellow Catfish and Several Striped Catfish that we’re at least 2X as big as my previous PB on this species of catfish.

Day 2 Fishing at Snakeheads Kingdom (North East of Bangkok, Thailand )
    Gear:
    Phenix Redeye Travel Series BR3-S 720 M / Shimano Tranx 200 HG (High Gear) / 50# Braid / 60# Fluorocarbon leader 18”
Insanely huge Snakeheads here. I managed a really decent sized one of both Striped 5#? and Giant 15# varieties. There are also Forest Snakehead in this reservoir. Could not connect with one of them. Bring your serious bass fishing skills for this lake. (I quickly found myself underprepared technically here). If you can not hit a 3’ circle consistently from 50’ this lake is not for you. I struggled, persevered and was rewarded (but very lucky).
Best to book this trip especially with Tap (BKKFishingGuide.com). I’d also highly recommend him for Bungsamran or any fishing around Bangkok as he picks you up at hotel, deals with any traffic, gets you there and has a specifically knowledgeable helper at each location, has a boat for Kingdom, feeds you lunch and drinks then takes you back home. I told him it is “Gentlemen’ Fishing”.
Last comment: that tilapia approximately 12” previously (last photo) was bitten in half right in front of our boat. Watch your fingers with the Snakeheads! Enjoy the photos:

    Fishing day #3
Very slow day casting jigs off the coast of Chumphon in the Gulf of Thailand. Rented a 25’ longtail boat to take us out to the island called Koh Khai (Egg Island). Managed a few nibbles on fast retrieves of a jig that looked like a 150 gram flat fall with a squid skirt at bottom hiding a single hook.
Here is the damage from today: Not sure of the name but the boat driver was happy he had dinner and a good size needle fish.

Thanks for that, those are some big catfish! Is that some kind of reserve or something, a lot of big fish in one spot close to Bangkok?

I don’t but my guide was like meh except for that big one! I know the Mekongs get well North of 200#s and the Siamese Carp exceed 300# but honestly I can’t imagine trying to subdue something that size in the heat. It would be hours and many bottled waters later. The tail (motors) on those fish are incredible. He was happy with both snakehead species though and said both were really good size.

Hey... I know Tap! Good guy full of good advice. If you want to beat the 200# mark on Mekong, fish the park in Ayutaya just south of Bangkok. They have a 100Kg club and it is very common to join in one day of fishing.

These are my Thai fishing buddies from Hua Hin (where I live)

Awesome that you got Snakehead. I was a bass fisherman first, so the skill set was the same for me on Snakehead. They are an awesome fish to catch. The topwater frog strikes look like someone flushed a toilet under your bait!

Thanks for your pre trip advice Brian! I’m having a great time. Exotic is next on the list just hanging out in Phuket for a bit. I’m really hoping for a Red Tail Cat and an Arapiama. I saw both these fish while walking around the Bungsamran lake but they are on the not allowed to be targeted list. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I was in Phuket and Krabi last week. If you think Bangkok was hot, just wait!

You must go to Krabi and stay a few days to island hop and snorkel or dive. Take a break from fishing, it’s well worth it. I stayed on Ao Nang beach at a brand new Holiday Inn express for $58 a night including giant buffet breakfast. Central to everything, won’t need a car. You can also find nice bungalows with pools for about $20 bucks a night on AirBnB. Koh Phi Phi, one of the prettiest islands in the south is only a 1.5 hour ferry across. Can stay there too really inexpensively. Water and beaches are phenomenal!

MUCH nicer than Phuket, no crazy traffic!

    Here’s some pics:

We are working our way clockwise around the Coast and will be in Pang Nga to fish at Exotic Fishing (Mike Bailey’s Place) then on to Krabi for R&R only. I tried contacting Gilhams but was unimpressed with the reception I received. They said nothing available, then yes for one day, then price difference. I know it’s world class but Homie Don’t Play That. Prefer to spend my money where people are kinder. Will enjoy Krabi / Phi Phi and James Bond islands. Lots to do there.

Sounds like you have a good grasp on things! If you come through Hua Hin my local parks are only 100 to 200 baht a day! Far cry from the touristy joints. I fish every Monday night at Cha-Am Fishing Resort. Be happy to have you join me. All my fish have been sub 100lbs but we have a ton of fun with em. My Thai number is 06 2729 3048. I have my phone on me 100% of the time. Remember to smile first or smile back and you can fix any situation in Thailand. It’s a wonderful country as long as you avoid the Americans living here! LOL

Thanks Brian your advice has been very helpful. This will be my first and last visit to Phuket. We stayed at this beautiful hotel called The Charm Hotel but honestly the whole city smells like a cesspool with a fruity finish. The heat has been oppressive. It is overrun with farang and pricing has been at least triple what we have spent elsewhere for a better and more authentic Thai experience. We picnicked on the Patong Beach tonight and that was the best part of our stay here by a long shot.

Before Phuket we were in Chumphon, just South of you. We were also in Ampawa at the floating market, just North of you. It would have been great to get together and fish.
