Tesoro 12S recommendation

Just bought a Tesoro 12s and would like to match a rod to it. Fairly new to ocean fishing other than rockfish and salmon, but would like to use this throw irons for YFT. I am looking at the Phenix Black Diamond 809H. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Great reel. I have one and sold the other. I have it on a few different rods but the Phoenix you are thinking of is perfect for throwing colt snipers or whatever other irons at tuna.
I put the Tesoro on the UC predator and have caught several yellowfin and bluefin tuna up to 80 pounds on that reel. I also use it as a surface iron reel spare too!

I always used my phenix 869 h, the 8.5 feet version as a bait reel for 30 lb line . i thought it was dialed in just perfectly for school size tuna and offshore kelp for yellowtail etc., a good number of people feel comfortable fishing jigs on it but didnt feel that way because i thought it would snap the blank because of the diameter of the blank. But that reel on a predator, i have a 76 version is an extremely powerful setup. no big fish on it other than maybe 27 lb seabass and 18 lb yellowtail that didnt even feel fair fighting them. The predator is light and strong and feels like 40 lb rod but is strong as 50 or 60 lb. i would go with predator in 8 foot version for your application.

Thanks for the advice, I went on the United Composite site but was confused on which Predator I should be looking at. What is the consensus on the Phoenix Black Diamond PSW809XHJ?

The 809xhj is the jigstick version. It’s all what feels good in your hand. I know guys who use the 809xhj for wahoo so I’m sure your fine fishing that rod for the local tuna.
I fish my 909xhj with snipers, surface iron and poppers.

Shon, do you recommend the RUS 80 Predator or the RCE 80 Predator with the Tesoro 12?

Check out UC RGP90 Reaper if you plan to throw iron.

I have 2 of the RUS 80 predator. Defiantly a 40# rod but will do fine with 50#. Like rexor suggested, I also would recommend looking at the RPG reaper if you like a longer rod. It’s a beast and can handle everything locally!

Kimbo, I thought about the PCH 901XH, but I have never used a 9' one before. I do have a PCH 801XH how would that be compared to the 901 and the others mentioned above?

Pretty stiff, lots of pulling power. Haven't thrown any light jigs on it, don't know how well it would work with a tady a or 45. I'm able to throw those on the 801xh but I have a komodo 471 on that, lighter spool. I have a 690 for lighter jigs/ bait.

Kimbo, which reel clamp did you use to secure your Tesoro to the 901xh rod?

Pch rod is available with and without a reel seat. I got the reel seat version.

A dfp clamp would work with it.
