Booked a trip a month back and just waited. Boarded the Prowler with Andrew Viola at the helm. Left at 9:00 pm, baited up and traveled to the grounds, just a guess but about 60 miles. About 5 am we were on a big spot of jumbos dropping FF’s, Tady ST, flyline and sinker rigs and two hooked up, but of course the fellows with lite line and instant spooling going on, zing pow and we move on after an hour.
About 10:00 am we found our first foamer and it was foamer after foamer from then until about 5:00 pm. We started our run and gun 2-5 hook ups each time. Fish were from 25 - 70 plus pounds. We would have sometimes 3 or four spots all around us frothing up. A few fish came on the soak when we sat on them. Most came on 80gram size Colt Snipers, Mega Baits, a WaxWing, medium sized poppers, 115 sized flash minnow looking hard baits and two on a hook up bait 1.5 ounce green sardine. After several attempts to get some of the crashing tuna with bait, someone snagged a tiny anchovy and that’s when we switched it up to a successful fun trip. 26 for 50 maybe on the BFT. 1 - 3 on the kelp yellows. One landed was about 20lbs? Captain is awesome, crew and the food was great. Fishing Syndicate brought loaner gear and raffled I believe a 9 foot stick. Those rods feel awesome. I hooked landed and lost fish on a Calstar 690j 30# with an Avet MXJ and mega bait with single hook. I then threw out my UC 1000 Del Mar with a Torium 20 80lb spectra and 100lb short pink YoZuri leader with a 1.5 ounce green sardine hook up bait. I used that leader as I was already chewed off earlier on 40 lb and 20. Since you could see the mix of 30-100lb in the froth, it was something I was hoping for on my Del Mar. I love fishing the long rod. So it was a fun trip indeed.

Thanks for the great write up. It sound like most fish were hooked on small lures and poppers, that match the hatch? Also were any caught on bait (sardines or anchovies)?

Yes some were caught on sardine. First light when we were fishing a school of jumbo (don’t fish less than 80 type), a few hooked up and we’re instantly spoiled or watched slowly as all the line went. We landed about 8 on bait.

That small silver lure WAS a 1.5 ounce Hook Up Bait in green sardine. I lost one earlier to a chew off, so I tied on a 100lb pink flouro and feed it to one. Mixed schools for sure. Don’t know what size will grab it. I should have thrown the left over out, since it looked like the size bait they were feeding on.

Can you tell us more about the Hook Up Bait? I looked it up and they don't say anything about the hook. Are they big and strong enough to handle the larger BF?
What size BF did you land of yours?

The hooks are thin wire Owner, so I was probably at the max fish weight with the 1.5 ounce. I think you could get a 70 if you do some drag adjustments. My fish was 32lbs and the other maxed my scale (50lbs). I am going to guess 60’s.

Oh geez, I’d be terrified to throw a hookup bait out there, given I’ve seen bay bass straighten those hooks.

Nice job putting the hurt on the twofin bluna!
