I need advice on getting a physical FMM Permit at the border. We are crossing the border Saturday but my USA passport expires in early December so I can't get the FMM online (180 day permit). From what I've read, It appears that I should be okay if I walk in as I can just get an FMM issued with a shorter duration but let me know if I'm missing something. Also do I go to the same office someone mentioned in my earlier thread?

Passport should be valid for six more months to get Fmm. Just go try if they give you shit ask for the free one and dont trip.

Same office. Then go back outside and pay bank, then go back in and get stamped. He'll try to sell you some hot sauce. Its good! But, they have it in bola for cheaper.

Yes, some years ago they asked for mine at the military check point near El Rosario and once at the cross into Baja Sur.

I've been asked a couple of times at Guerro Negro but only heading north before 5pm. I think the immigration guy gets off work around 5. We would tell him that we intended to get the paperwork done when we got to Ensenada until one year I think he remembered us and charged $20 per person but gave us no fmm. Now i just get the paperwork when I cross. One less thing to worry about.

If you purchase Mexican auto insurance , some policies are not valid without a FMM .

We will stop and get it at the border so hopefully it's not a big deal. I checked online to see if I could get the form filled out in advance but no luck.

You can get them in advance for a fee. Then you still have to stop and pay at the bank. Just get it in Baja.

It is not about being checked but about being a legal immigrant. Talked to an officer in San Ysidro about it and he said without it and you get in trouble for some reason, ie, accident, injury, and officials are involved, more charges are just piled up. I do not take the chance anymore.

I've been asked for it a bunch of times over the years
Mostly at border between Baja Norte and Baja Sur but I've also been asked at military check points at Maneadero, La Paz and the one north of San Felipe we always get ours at the border
