I have been driving back and forth from Ensanada and want to try and cross at the Tecate border crossing, like to here of some of the pros and cons. Looks like to wait times are much more shorter. I am in OC, so it looks like getting back to the 805 is no big deal. any ideas?

The border wait is so chill. 2 lanes only, rarely wait there longer than 20-30 minutes. On a big weekend, could be longer but not too bad. Getting there is the only thing. You can take the 3 from Ensenada and go through wine country, its a beautiful drive. Worth a shot to see if you like it. Way mellower. Just keep in mind the border is closed from 11pm till 5am and no Sentri lane.

Tecate border crossing will add 1 hour to your drive to Ensenada. Depending on wait time at Tijuana it might actually save you time on the way back. Tha drive is very nice but some road construction will put you on dirt roads for a couple of miles. Unless they finished it but I don't think so. I haven't been since april. I crossed going down in Tecate and Tijuana coming back. I haven'y crossed at Tijuana for years and it SUCKED! I will only cross at Tecate from now on. My opinion is give Tecate a try next time you go down. Worst case scenerio you spend an extra hour, decide you don't like it and come home through Tijuana.

Crossing at Tecate is the only way to go. Tiajuana sucks. If there's still road construction on hwy 3, you can take the toll road from Ensenada to Tiajuana. But get off at the Puerto Nuevo exit and take the free road to Popotla, then take the four lane highway from there to Tecate. I avoid the Tiajuana crossing like the plague. I've heard that the construction on Hwy 3 has been completed, but then Bobrefuss was on it in April and it wasn't done then. Probably no a big deal.

One more vote for Tecate. We have a place in Rosorito and use Tecate every trip. Fast crossing-2-30 minutes and way mellow. I only remember one time we had to wait 30 minutes. Usually it is about 10-15.
    Enjoy

The only down side is the two lane section in the mountains other than that there is very little traffic at the border compared to TJ.....

Sentri is great, I got mine. BUT, everyone in your vehicle must have one. No trailers, No pets, etc etc. Most of the time I cant use mine anyway. But still cheap enough to be worth it. And the BP officers respect the card and I rarely ever get secondary anymore.

I was turned down. I am self employed and they kept asking me for pay stubs. They are not that easy to deal with.

Lots of paperwork, and a clean record. My girlfriend has a misdemeanor on her record and they denied her. Mine went through smooth, but takes some effort. time, money, interview, vehicle check etc.

Finally did this route from Ensenada, drive was nice, some constuction, but not bad, got across in 8 minutes. Will do it again. took me 4 hours to Newport. Last trip I went though Ota Mesa and waited 3 hours in line for a 6 hour ride home. Fuel burn was higher as many grades.

Having crossed at every port of entry from TJ to Juarez numerous times, I can tell you with utmost certainty, It is always a crap shoot. The worst wait I ever had was 4 hours, and that was at Tecate, but I have also been through there many times in just a few minutes. I always get sent to secondary there though, and there is the windy roads, after a few trips it gets old. Monday mornings seem to be the worst at all of the crossings, but did I say it was a crap shoot.

Sentri's are great, but it has its limitations, as someone else mentioned.

Have fun, and don't stop unless you see a badge. Good luck with that.

Man, I am glad I never have to do that again.
