RE: making the long run...I have made it on a 23' Searay in past years and currently on a 25' Parker...I try to do runs on the second or third day of a Santa Ana just before the winds are scheduled to stop....Runs out are usually flat past Catalina..
....Timing back in can be an issue...If you hit oncoming waves generated by offshore winds, you can eat it royal...Had to divert toward Nic once, as the wind and waves were still bigger than was safe to proceed in...Wind let off 4 hours later and I turned back on course for home...Timing is everything....I carry some extra 5 gal. gas cans in case I have to divert into Avalon if things go sideways...

here are the actual #s for 11-2-2020 for Parker 2320, 180#, heavy Penn 50&30 on OSP, added tower with controls, 3 guys and got a total 162 gallons of gas, 2-130#+ fish and one 40#. Dana Point to Pyramid Cove to Cortez back to Dana Point but had to cut it short at around 4pm because we were out of ice and little nervous about gas for out first time out to Cortez.

Sounds like overnight at the island is a much better option. Anchoring up is always makes for a sleep a-lot-less night. Looking into fuel bladders.
Ordered an atl petro flex 50 gal. Made in America, good peeps. Going to fit it on my bow with tie downs. Parker 2320.

That sounds about right. There’s no way it’s 350 miles 🙄

^^

Here goes, you had to make me drag my ass out to the boat to take pictures to prove the distance so here it’s 😀. My style of fishing is not the same as anyone else.

there are 3 routes in different dates but look at the middle route.

Cortez is 115 miles from mission bay deppening on what part of the bank you go to so 230 mile minimum round trip. With out anything inbetween and assuming you can drive your boat in a perfectly stright line.

I have a 2017/2320 with a 300 and did Tanner a few weeks back, I got amazing mileage as I stripped everything off the boat except for safety gear (+ sat phone and life raft), food, water, basic gear, and 160# of ice, opah kill bag (it holds ice better than my reliable), 2 bean bags. No bait, only kites, flyers, and trolling gear. All that gear that builds up takes up weight, sleeping bags, pillows, jackets, 3000 hooks, rock cod gear, etc. I cleaned my boat out before having the inside detailed, I was amaze how much shit accumulated in there. Just say no.

238.2 miles for 117g of fuel. Ran smooth going out at 24-25. 3 guys, anyone who knows me, knows I'm really 1.5 guys (so call it 3.5).

Thats Awesome milage.
Striping down the boat is primarily why I mentioned earlier that sometime leaving that 4th man behind is nessasary. Just rotate the friends. A couple hundred lbs here and 50 lbs there will all add up. Besides look at all the tackle you have now that forgot or thought was lost.

We did the run twice once was about 200 nautical miles and the other time was 230 because we had to run around a little bit to find them

800#'s of ice? Wow! Big hold. 👍
Anyways, Id say if you have to nickel a dime your load and fuel so much you're using various water bottle strategies for efficiency you might just be asking for trouble.

Absolutely agree, in my case we took an extra 25 gals of gas as a buffer and everyone agreed if we consumed past a set amount of burn we would a) turn around and agree that we may land up trolling speed at times to conserve fuel. historically I get about 1.6/1.7 fully loaded on average for a trip (1.4 there, 2.0ish coming back).

Just picked up two 15 gallon containers to have a total of 200 gallons. Waiting for today's reports.

I would leave Monday morning to be at the bank in the afternoon low tide swing.

How much weight you carrying when you go? Ice, Bait Tank, etc...
I believe we had 2 kill bags up in front with a total of 300 lbs of ice. 1 scoop of bait. And the rest of sleeping supplies, food, kite rods etc..Also we cruised all the way out there @ 20kts with impeccable weather window. two EPIRBS VHF radio handheld - waterproof. Also we carried about 10 gallons of extra fuel..We burn about 8-10 GPH. Which is very good.

I took my 25' boat to Tanner / Cortez several times. That boat got its best fuel economy and displacement speeds (for that hull, about 6 knots). It was about 100 nm from MdR, and took about 16 hours to get there. I would depart MdR in the early afternoon to arrive at grey light, then fish to mid afternoon, then head to Cat Harbor to spend the night on a mooring. Then fish Catalina the next day, and buzz back to MdR that afternoon. That way, two good days of fishing, no need to carry fuel (and it wasn't the carrying that worried me most, it was the filling without spilling) and no anchoring anywhere. The only downside was that running (if you call 6 knots running) through the night created a little sleep deprivation.
