After multiple overnight trips this year with not much to show for them, I decided to book a 4 pack charter out to Tanner to try my luck. I’ve caught plenty up to the 50-60 pound range, but I had the itch to catch a big tuna this year.

We headed out on the Parker 2820 at 8am, stopped to fuel up and grab some karma frozen flyers. The trip out was about 4 hours doing 29-35 the whole way. We got beat up pretty good on the way out there. Got to the bank around 1pm and rigged up. The weather was beautiful and the wind was under 5 knots. Made it hard to fly the kite at times. Overall it was a pretty slow day for everyone out there compared to how it’s been. We finally had a blow up right before calling it a day. First one didn’t stick, but he blew up on it again and that one stuck.

I grabbed the rod from the captain, placed in the rod holder and proceeded to wind on the fish. As my first time fighting a bigger bluefin, this thing felt like a freight train and wore me out in short order! Captain insisted on keeping the drag fully buttoned from start to finish. I handed the rod after a while to let everyone get a piece, then finished him off on the rail and brought it to gaff. This fish was 121 on the scaled gilled and gutted, but it felt so much bigger.

We left right after at about 5pm, and got back around 8:45. While I didn’t get the cow that I was hoping for, this was still the fish of a lifetime for me and hope for many more. Shoutout to captain Leo and into the depths sportfishing for the memorable trip.

It was. I inquired through their website about a month ago and they had an opening for me on 9/24. It was 725, plus an extra fuel charge if we all wanted to do the long run to tanner.

If I were to run Tanner, this is exactly how I do it, charter an experienced crew.

    Good job! Nice fish! 👍👍
BEING SMART IS GREAT BUT THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR EXPERIENCE. WHEN I met Leo he was running a skiff for Newport Boys club. He has been moving up the food chain ever since. Maybe the Excel is in his future? (Hey Leo call me. Thx)
