Caught lots of big fish on my G1 SX the past few years. Never serviced. Noticed recently that the freespool is loosing its free-ness. How can you tell if you need new bearings or just more oil? Not seeing any corrosion on the bearings. Just some corrosion on the inside of the MC mechanism on the inside of the left sideplate and some salt in the grease on the left sideplate. Thanks!

Needs a cleaning. Factory grease gets stiff and ineffective with age. Replace with either less good quality grease or bearing lube and service more often.

Sold my Parker. You can find me on the Red Rooster.
If your bearings aren't making noise they will likely be OK if lubricated with a light oil; the stuff that came with your reel is OK as are several others. If that doesn't speed up things, the problems are a bit more severe and you probably need new bearings, fresh lubrication and maybe more...

The charter with the best price.
Never serviced.
Bearings are not the only factor in freespool, but that statement is what blows my mind, Avets are by far the easiest reel to maintain & work on in the lever drag market. I strongly encourage you to web search "SX tutorial" and you will have all the guidance you'll need to get your reel in tip top condition. It will probably lead you to my friend Alan Tani's forum, probably the worlds foremost site on reel repair.

That said, get some new bearings, take the covers off, clean out the heavy grease, lube with CorrosionX, replace covers, clean & lube spool shaft & adjacent parts, reassemble reel, tape down the line on your spool, spin it, you should get close to a minute of freespool.

Good luck & don't be intimidated, like I said AVETS ARE THE EASIEST REEL TO WORK ON.

Service it, like others have said, it’s easy. Take the shields off the spool bearings... at least the ones that face out. Clean them and give them a drop of tsi321. The other bearings get packed in grease. In spite of Avets advice I coat the drag washers with Cal’s grease too.

Try this video to assist with your service. If you perform a service like this after each trip your freespool will never be too slow. It take 8–10 minutes.

I too agree to see Alan Tani’s site, he is the master.
