We hunted the Bloomingdale section of Lake Southerland yesterday. It was a great experience.. but a real desert in the way of turkeys!! No gobbling or hens making noise at sunrise...virtually silent... no gobbles in the distant either. After the sun came up, we hunted our spot for a bit...but nothing was going on. We did a long walk and stalk thru the oaks and terrain...saw a total of 1 hen track, and 1 old tom track! My buddy hunted this section last year, and had lots of turkey action at dawn...birds moving all day, and sign everywhere. Totally a different deal this year! We saw 1 hen later in the morning.. and nothing else. Check out the upper right corner of this picture.. that should be the lake there! It is really low!! I think only 1 bird has been taken at Southerland this season!! Pray for El Nino rains next winter!!

I hunted Bloomdale on the 8th. Nobody took anything that day. Didn't hear a gobble all day. Saw a bald eagle though. It came within 10 feet of attacking our decoys, saw me, then flew off in a hurry.

It's bad.. I think we need to consider shutting down the turkey hunting until this drought gets over! We don't want to hunt these birds into extinction... like they did in the forests in Los Angeles!
