Following up from my other post, I was thinking that this might be a good time to put up a few gear threads for surf fishing.

RE: Backpacks (AFTCO)
As I've mentioned before, I spend a lot of time being in the water while surf fishing, and I always carry 2 rods with me, so finding a good backpack that can fit terminal gear, jacket, food/water with a rod holder (in appropriate position) has been challenging. I generally fish for longer sessions, so no pack is not really an option at the home beach. I've tried a few, and I currently love my AFTCO pack (https://aftco.com/products/aftco-fishing-backpack), but, as it has no rod holder I created one with a loop on the left bag strap and top carry loop deal to keep the rod out of my casting swing area. I use the side pouches for flouro (lighter bait flouro on one side and heavier flouro for artificials on the other side), the lower back pocket for a smaller hook/terminal box, the upper back for keys/cell phone/sun screen/don't get wet items, and the main compartment for trays, jacket, shammy towel for drying off/taking a break (etc.), and food/water. The pack has a second main compartment against your back that can double as fish storage if I catch a legal halibut or can't revive a Corbina/Spotfin. Plus, I have been pretty hard on this pack and the zippers/straps have not failed (I always empty and hose out if possible between uses). Comfort is good, too. So, hard to beat, sans the rod holder issue (which I have an alternative solution for). I will say it is a tad bulky, but that helps when you want to set it down in the sand as it is stable. Also, I really like the variety of compartments as it makes re-rigging easy when you are not searching for stuff hunched over on the beach. Accordingly, overall, it checks a lot of boxes.

However, I am interested in other options if you guys have one you like. Alternatively, I am interested in DIY ideas on rod holders that can offset away from the casting pendulum. I have a basic rod holder on a web belt I use from time to time when I am in the water sight fishing (so I have both a bait rod and LC/swim bait at the ready at all times ... and can shelf a rod to land a fish if needed to keep it out of sand), but would prefer to get the back figured out to the extent that I can switch them out in the water quickly. As it stands, I have to go back to the dry sand and drop the pack to change out rods due to my j-rigged rod holder or drop the pack on the beach and use the belt to carry rod #2 as the pack interferes with the positioning of the rod if the belt is on (pic of the web belt thing w 2 rod holders and pliers/split rings below). Anyhow, I am interested in other thoughts or opinions.

Fastened the same rod holder you have to the middle (of three) that sits over the back mesh. Tons of storage inside, seals to be waterproof, and no zippers at all. I store my hard lures (jerkbaits, jigparas, etc.) in little plastic containers in the two smaller mesh pockets on the outside, everything else inside in plastic baggies. The main storage is large enough to neatly stack tackle trays as well, if that's your thing. I have beat the living fuck out of this thing for over a year and it's still rock solid.

I use a bag that goes over my shoulder to keep gear in. I bring 2 or 3 rods depending. I have a giant sand spike I added a couple pieces of pvc so I can put 3 rods on it. I’ll post up on a stretch of beach and leave the extra rods and the bag on the spike, it’s high enough so dogs don’t piss on my gear. Makes rigging easier with the rod in the spike and keeps my reels off the sand. A minute or so to load and move if I want to. When I find a few fish I’ll pound the area pretty good until I move on. Might not be good on a crowded beach though,I do dawn patrol, not many people around I’m fortunate to be close to some good beaches with very few people early
I have one rod for c-rig, 1 for lc’s and Sometimes a third for krockadiles

Good stuff here. Much appreciated.

And, I think I have one of those packs, Colonel. Gifted from a buddy and it is buried in the garage. Gonna see if it is still here.

same here, just a fanny pack.

I got everything in a small Fanny pack.

1 extra leader
2 extra lures in a lure pouch (LC 110 and a 21g coltsniper)
Pliers and line cutter

That’s all I take surf fishing, and that’s what I love about surf fishing.

I can see the utility in a fanny pack as there are days where I don't need the pack at all in the mid summer. But, I always need water/food/jacket as I walk a ton and am usually out for many hours.

Last spring, I bought the Piscifun backpack. Everything is holding up well - zippers, fabric, straps are good to go.

I've used and abused a Rodtek backpack I bought from the shows years ago. It's stable and has durable material on the bottom so you can set it down on the sand with no worry. The side rod holder has been a very useful feature. It's carried everything you said you'd like to bring and more. I've even brought it on the sportboats for offshore trips. Haven't seen this on sale recently though. Your Aftco backpack looks to be a great replacement if it had the same rod style holder.

Now a days I travel much lighter for shore pounding so I've switched to the smaller Aftco Urban Backpack. It has two velcro straps for the rod holder but I prefer the bottom pocket with the bungee cinch design of the Rodtek better. Also this one doesn't stand on it's own so swapping rods can be a chore if you don't find a clean rock or bench to set it down. With that said I mostly use one rod so this doesn't bother me much. Also my sessions are much shorter and more target focused so this piece of gear works out perfect for the limited tackle I bring.

I still rock a fanny pack when it's too hot for a shirt and I don't want a backpack tan.

I also have the grunden’s 30l rumrunner. It’s a terrific pack. I used to use a 45l waterproof pack that I bought at the Fred hall show. Forgot the exact brand. But it was too big and didn’t fit as well. My back would hurt at the end of a long day. The 30l rumrunner is much more compact and just about exactly the right size for the tackle I would usually bring with me and a bottle of water.

If you don’t need to pack a jacket or a lot of food or extra accessories I would probably go with a 3 tube traditional style surf bag with a pouch and a water bottle holder on the side that you wear with a strap over your shoulder. Totally light and you can wear it all day and not notice the weight.

Walmart: outdoor products quest backpack. Get some 3/4-1in. Pvc piping and either some metal pipe clamps or some zip ties and attach it to the Molle. I have been running bags like this for years. Have had my most recent quest for about 5.

Thanks for this, I’ve been looking for something that I could carry and never have to set down in the sand to access. For under $35 shipped, it’s hard to beat.

Hands down the best gear bag ive owned. Super rugged with ergonomic straps, holds everything i need for the day plus a six pack. Only thing it is missing is the rod holder, looks like ill be making that modification as well!

Here's how I have the rod holder rigged up on mine (it's not pretty, but it gets the job done):
