Let work know on Monday that I may be taking off Friday, vacation/personal day. Weather looked good for Thursday and Friday, then getting windy for the weekend. Got to save those sick days for fishing on a moments notice.
I woke up feeling like crap. Pondered a waisted day lying in bed. Then pulled myself up by the bootstraps finally at 6 am. Was in the water at 7:30 am.
There were light offshore winds in the morning, then west for an hour, then flat calm.
Only squid for bait, so I first hit the rockfish spots off the point since it was glassy. Current was ripping downhill. 280 ft was not going to work. Even inside it was stiff but manageable. No action to speak of.
Went up to the sewer pipe at Aliso Beach in 180 feet. Slower current lots of bites, for 2 hours. Water was about 20 feet visibility, and the warmest I saw totay, 64.5 degrees. I caught about 10 Sculpin all 10” -11”. I love those things for eating. Last time I took a 12” I swore I would take no less than 13”-14”. I need a decent filet to justify the kill. Those F ers are all head and fins,
I did keep two Rockfish that I can't positively identify what they are. Looking at my laminated picture card, they appear to be Coppers. That sounds about right?
Same spot, 180 feet, I uneventfully pulled up this larger model Sand Bass. Her guts were hanging out, so I killed her. Wish I would have caught that one on a lead head inside with light gear.
Not sure if I’m imagining this, bait size Mackerel seem to be scarce. Bass fishing may be slower than usual.
I hope the report can help someone planning a trip.
If you ever see my boat "the SLIDER", introduce yourself as a BD member. Bolan and I would kike to meet you.
