I'm going to head out of long beach to do some rock fishing this weekend, maybe try for a halibut, but I haven't gone out during this time of year before.
So I was seeing if it's better to go with live squid or sardines during this time of year?

For rock fish? Live squid will be better 9 times out of 10. But they're also more expensive and aren't completely necessary.

You really don't need live squid if you have live fin bait. Try using a dropper loop with a live fin bait on the lower hook, and a fresh or thawed from frozen squid on the upper hook. The fin bait swimming will produce action in the squid that is irresistible to most all bottom critters.

Squid for sure. Went out for rockfish last week and they wanted nothing to do with the finbait. Dropped a frozen squid down and instabite.

Can't go wrong with a dropper loop and a couple strips of squid.

I have good luck with squid strips when fishing for rockfish. Mackerel strips too.

Thanks for the information. I'll go back to using squid strips.
