Baja Norte

Coronado Islands
From Michael on the Hired Gun: Went out with friends this morning. Our plan was to work the islands for yellows. Arrived at 630am. Wind was already starting. Three different swells but doable. Hoping for it to lay down but got progressively worse. Worked the weather side with another boat on the slow troll. Managed one yellowtail at 22 pounds on the scale. The CC managed two and bugged out. Smart choice in 21 CC for what comes next. Wind and more mixed swell!!! Buck nasty from here out. Snuck in the lee side of North Island for 5-pound calicos and sculpin on the drift from north to south, launching swim baits right into the Tahiti-like water as it bounced back of the rock. Fun stuff. Came back around and put the jigs in all the way to the north 9 at 5.5 knots and 20 knot head wind and 5' to 7' south traveling swell. Saw jumping yellowtail on one kelp and birds not doing the right things…going uphill for nada. Caught some and made it home safe. 25 Grady with isinglass saved us from the salt shower. All on all, good day though. Tight lines all!

302
Kelp here with small yellowtail. No dorado.

Coronado's / 101 Bank / 425
From Wes: Fished on a buddy's boat today. Went to the Coronado's. Started at 5 minute kelp to find green water and most the kelp down. The weather was still nice so we went down to the 101. Found a kelp and put 3 dorado and 2 yellowtail on with surface iron. We jumped in and shot 2 more yt. There were close to 100 fish but 90% of them were very small, 2 to 3 pounds.
Moved out West towards the 425 and found a kelp with a handful of yellowtail and put 2 more on the boat. Headed back towards the islands and found another jumbo kelp. As we jumped in my buddy got a dodo on a waxwing and then the school left. Finished the day at Middle Grounds for nothing. Saw a couple guys hooked up but nothing for us on the spear. Wind wasn't too bad and the North West swell backed off in the afternoon.
All the dodos were puking up squid. Yellowtail had micro finbait.

Tuna Pens
Captain Mike Hadfield aboard the 6-pack Josie Lynn reported in after returning last night from an overnight trip down to the tuna pens. Mike said that the wind and waves were pretty bad as he was taking green water over the 44' Pacifica's flybridge all the way up to the tuna tower as he was traveling South to the pens at 6 knots. When at the pens his clients put 5 bluefin to 40 pounds on the boat before Mike started heading back up the line.
While fishing the waves were coming over the sides while stopped in the trough. One wave in particular soaked the whole deck and crew, wrecked the inside of the galley tossing all the drawers, coffee pot, plates, food, etc. all over the ground. It took him around two hours to get everything put back together. Later on when he got farther up the line near the Coronado Islands, he checked his engine room to find tools and engine stuff in the same mess.
While headed back up the line he found a kelp and ended the day there with limits of yellowtail 4 to 20 pounds.

120 to 150 miles
The bad weather is down here, too. It isn't hindering the bite on the Sea Adventure 80 though. They scored 109 yellowfin on the 2nd day of a 3.5 trip. Most of the yellowfin down here now are in the 8 to 15 pound-class and are being found on kelps and open water jig stops.

There are also dorado and MILLIONS of small rat yellowtail on almost everything that floats, from old pallets to kelp paddies This is the area where the 2 to 3 day fleet is working and is centered.
There are also more tuna inside of here as the Panga guys out of San Quintin are loading up on the smaller-grade yellowfin as well.

Aries Sportfishing Fleet Fishing Report, Mazatlan

Following the torrential rains of August, the fishing bounced back with a vengeance in the Mazatlan area and the sailfish have decided they want to bite. Everyone is hoping the bite will continue and from the elements overview, there is no reason the bite shouldn't. Overall, conditions are near perfect and the temperatures and clarity remain excellent throughout the area. The overall fish counts for a total of 10 days reflected 9 sailfish, (3 released) 4 dorado and 1 yellowfin tuna for the offshore waters and for the 6 super panga fishing days reporting for the inshore fishing reflected 2 sailfish, 1 corvina, 2 red snapper, 15 dorado and 5 trigger fish.

El Cid Marina Sportfishing Fleet Fishing Report, Puerto Morelos

Another mixed-bag fishing week from Puerto Morelos that reflected a 13-fish variety for the anglers, including a couple of sailfish that had been strangers for the past 2 week s. The area seems to have settled into a period of calmness and for the time being, there is no inclement weather on the horizon for this area. The overall fish counts for the week reflected 2 sailfish, 27 dorado, (the fish of the week) 2 blackfin tuna, 1 king mackerel, 11 giant Atlantic barracuda, 10 bonito, 4 wahoo, 5 grouper, 8 triggerfish, 2 banana fish, 2 pargo and 3 mutton snapper.

PM Climate: Partly cloudy days with a good mix of sunshine and stable temps that are holding from 74 nights to 92 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Excellent sea temps that remain stable at 85 degrees over the entire area and mostly light and variable surface breezes that flow in from the easterly directions.

Best Fishing Areas: This unique area begins less than a half-mile from the entrance to the Marina El Cid and extends outbound in all directions from there.

Best Bait: There has been no change as the long-trusted fresh caught ballyhoo provide the "ammunition" for all of the sportfishing boats in this area.

08.21.12

The offshore fishing is really much better than the report reflects and with the full moon condition out of the way, it should start back up again, especially for the sailfish. The numbers of charters continue to be a bit slow at this time of year and boat selection remains very good for the anglers for both inshore or offshore fishing. This past week's report for the offshore areas reflected a total of 11 days fished that produced 6 sailfish, 3 yellowfin tuna, (to about 25 pounds) and 13 dorado, (mostly in the 12 to 20 lb. ranges). The inshore super pangas reported for three-days fished and reflected 6 roosterfish, (released) 1 mako shark and 6 dorado.

The talk of the town is Hurricane Ernesto, which blew through the area on Tuesday and Wednesday with little fanfare. The port was closed and it was windy and rainy, but otherwise, an occasional tree was blown over to highlight the damage report. The boats fared well at the Marina El Cid and they are back to fishing today. The overall report for the area did dwindle down and I would suppose it was due to the low pressure throughout the area, but all in all, it was still pretty good for the anglers that did go out for the day. We received a report for 13 days fished that reflected a 10-fish variety this past week which included 13 dorado, 3 wahoo, 7 giant Atlantic barracuda, 5 blackfin tuna, 7 amberjack, 16 triggerfish, 10 grouper, 17 banana fish and 4 mutton snappers.

Final Thoughts

Once again the question regarding the use of circle hooks has appeared on the forum. For the record, below are some of the reasons that The Billfish Foundation has urged their use. And still below that is the link back to the forum post offering a variety of opinions…

Let’s examine some of these claims from a sportfishing viewpoint more closely:

User Friendly: From the novice to pro, one of the more difficult techniques to learn is the “strip-strike.” However, with a circle hook it is only necessary to come tight, as the hooks are self-hooking. In saltwater particularly this is a plus for most anglers. This allows the angler to simply put the reel in gear and wait until the fish is firmly hooked. The design of the circle hook makes them both snag- and weed-free because of the hook point is bent inward. Also, with the hook point turned inward, you seldom have to re-sharpen the hook. Crimping the barb down on this hook design has little or no impact on the performance of the hook, whereas with a J-hook, a fish may be lost if the line is allowed to go slack. Since the fish is usually hooked in the corner of the mouth, the line is less likely to be worn or frayed from rubbing on the bill or mouth of the fish.

Safer: The hook point inward design means that seldom if ever can an angler hook themselves or someone else when casting – or even when tying the hook on.

Higher hook up ratio: Most reports indicate a significant increase in hook-up to take ratio when using the circles. The exception is when the angler attempts to set the hook instead of simply allowing the line to come tight.

More attractive from a conservation perspective: Regular J-hooks will imbed themselves on the first irregular surface they touch in the fish’s mouth. Whereas, with a circle, the line comes tight and if the fish turns even slightly, the circle hook travels through and slips until it catches on the corner of the mouth. Because of the unusual shape, the fish is seldom hooked anywhere other than in the corner of the mouth. That allows for the release of a fish that is virtually undamaged.

http://www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/baja-mexico-fishing-reports-discussion/451801-do-you-guys-use-circle-hooks.html
