RE: Stickballs/Jerkbaits

I've been pretty guilty of being solely focused on catching big Corbina and Spotfin over the past few years and have likely screwed myself out of some good halibut fishing, so I have been focused on using artificials more. Having grown up here, I used to fish my float tube a ton off PB point and in La Jolla and caught a ton of good halibut, a few legal WSB, big Calicos, etc. on the artificials just outside the surf and I used to spear all the above in the same areas. So, the fact that I lost focus or interest on targeting them with the artificials in the surf is weird to me. Just not enough time to do it all I guess. Anyhow, over the past year or so I have been trying to re-focus. In doing so, I have been acquiring/testing out stick baits and jerk baits in the surf. Obviously, the standard is the LC, but I have been impressed with some Rapalas recently. So, I am going to include some pics of the ones I carry and like. I'm interested in other people's experience with hard baits in the surf, though, as I am no expert. These are a few I like that have worked, or are in the box for testing. Also obviously, many of these have alternative uses, like in the bay for spotties, in the kelp for Calicos, or even on kelps off shore when the Dorado get lockjaw or the yellows are not eating the iron. Anyhow, here you go:

1. Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110- the standard. No comments needed. Most colors are great. I like Metallic Sardine, Sexy Smelt (and the glowing one), Cherry Berry, Jack Smelt, etc. Hard to beat. I do change out rings and hooks due to failures, though. Everyone has their own way of doing it and why, so I'll not bother to explain my own. The only real issue with these is the fact that they are a bit light when it is windy and can get blown around in the surge. Pictures below. Hooks and rings SUCK so need replacing. Don't do what I did and lose a big halibut to straightened shitty hooks and rings. Change em.
2. Lucky Craft Slender Pointer 127MR - Maybe the best casting of the surf hard baits I use as it is 3/4oz and more aerodynamic than the other LC's. Suspending/sinks so good for maintaining contact with the sand in 4-5' of water. This one has been very good for halibut in the bay as well as a few spotties, but time in the surf has been limited. Probably my favorite as I love the action and cast ability. Sardine color.
3. Rapala X-Rap 4" - I have the albino and olive green colors. Perch love em. But, lighter so harder to cast deep. Good for working a hole tight to the beach. Got a spotfinon the albino, too. Also, no need to replace hooks or rings (Thanks, Rapala ... and take f-ing notice LC!!!!!!).
4. Rapala X-Rap Saltwater - I have the mackerel and sardine colors in the 4". Have not tested these a ton yet, but the action is great in the surf and I imagine these are going to be winners come the spring/summer due to size/color/action. Castability is ok as they are a tad light for me, but, again, great choice. No need to change hooks and I look forward to making these do double duty on kelps when the dorado won't cooperate.
5. Rapala X-Rap Long Cast 12 - I have chrome mackerel and the blue mackerel color. These come in 2 sizes, 4 3/4" at 1 1/4 oz, and 5.5" at 1 7/8 oz. They cast like a dream and are in the box for windy days or for options when the bait is in. Great action and I am really looking forward to using these more for bigger halibut, etc. in the surf. As mentioned above, these serve double duty as they are good inshore/offshore, too. Big singles on these as their intended use is not in the surf, but I am not complaining. Love em ... and part of the reason I just got a new rod-reel for bombing hard baits in the surf.
6. Rapala BX Swimmer 12 - This one is 4 3/4" and 3/4 oz. It is jointed and swims like a dream. Not a lot of test time in the surf, but the bay bass love em. Really looking forward to these ones in the surf. No need to change out hooks. This one might end up being the best of the bunch. Will update after season.

I stole a few Nomad STYX 115's from Ali a few years ago which are in the box, too. I call them the "wobbly boot" as they suspend with crazy thrashing action. Caught a few halibut on them at Torrey initially but then got away from them. Not sure if they still make them, but if they do, not a bad alternative. They are a bit light, but the profile is awesome. However, hard to imagine a need at this point.

Thats what I got, so feel free to learn me on what you guys are using and what you like.

Forgot one. I also am testing out the Shimano Current Sniper Sinking stickbaits(one pictured above in sardine color and the white color) but no real data on them yet as I've only test-casted them in the bay. But, they look good, cast a ton, and have good action. They are 4 3/4" and 1 1/8 oz ... so kind of a perfect size. Jury is out still, but I am excited about them.

And, good thought above. I have not tried them yet, but liked what I saw when I was looking at them recently. Will check em out again.

Do you think the Hallies also eat the perch? I painted up this for a small surfperch imitation.

A PB’er got his anchor stuck at Cat. Came back with scuba gear and found too many anchors to tell which one was his. Speared a halibut, fileted it and found a ten inch calico bass in its stomach.

My buddy turned me on to this one just recently. I grabbed one to give it a trial run, it absolutely destroyed big perch and outfished the LC FM110 on the same day 5:1. It dives 4-6ft, so it loves to get snagged if you're fishing it around structure. Lost mine to a chunk of reef on the first day - proceeded to order 4 more when I got home, ha. I'm really excited to see how this thing does on Halibut. They swim great, and the little "flash boost" piece of foil in the body adds a nice flash/shimmer. They cast very similar to the LC FM110 - forget about it on a day where the wind is in your face. Very promising little jerkbait!

They look good.
Any comment on the hooks?
From the descriptions that I have read, it appears to be designed for fresh water, so the hooks might not be plated for saltwater.

Much better quality hooks than the stock cat shit LC FM110 hooks, I didn’t feel the need to swap them out like I do with other jerkbaits. Looked like a black chrome finish similar to the Owner stingers, although I didn’t get to fish it long enough to see how they held up to corrosion.

Really been taking a liking to the shimano flashboost lately, they cast pretty well and the little spring with the mirror makes them really easy to work slowly, which is how i like to fish my jerkbaits. You can just throw it near some structure and let the current give it all the action, hooks seem to hold up pretty well too.

I rinse all my lures with freshwater and shake them off after the surf. Limited sign of rust or none at all regardless if they are plated or not.

All the lures you listed will get bit. For years I only fished the xrap 4 ( probably have 40 of them now)and killed it. Then I started to fish the lc and did not get bit for a long time. Now the lc ms anchovy is one of my confidence baits. That jointed Rapala you posted is what I caught my first legal halibut on. That thing kills. Some less known lures that I completely kill it on are the megabass vision 110 and the osp rudra and varuna in 110 and 130. A bit pricier but they all have caught fish for me and you can find the osp lures on sale at thehookuptackle.com from time to time.

Great write up and thanks for all of your posts. Very good information all around.

Have you noticed any difference in strike rates with the Rapalas with the feather dressed tail hooks? I was thinking of adding Owner tournament trailers to my LCs and Saltwater X-Raps.

Let me fish on yours
What hooks do you put on your LC 110's? I replaced mine with Owner Stinger Trebles ST-41BC 2x size 6 and I think I like them. Got a 26" halibut on an LC 110 two weeks ago and the Owners did fine.

#4 Owner ST-56 are my standard replacement hooks. Very sturdy, but everything is relative to the stock hooks on LCs and Calissa lures lol.

I like the owner 56's, too. Honestly, though, I just go to Dana Landing and get what they have in stock so long as they are sturdy.

I like the extra tail flash on those tournament trailers. I don't know that it matters to the fish, but it matters to me as it just looks better in the water. I've been focusing on fishing big stuff slower recently, so I have gotten away from some of these. This thread needs revisiting when the water warms up a bit and we have some more species diversity in the surf.

I fish the long cast Rapalas religiously from Gonzaga to Ventura when I shorepound. Just change the hooks to trebles. Also really like the current sniper jerkbaits but they don’t lost very long

Both stick baits and jerk baits can be effective in the surf because they imitate the movements of natural prey, attracting fish that are actively feeding near the shore. It's important to choose the appropriate size and color of these lures based on the target species
