I am in a position to outfit my 26’ flybridge with a new engine. I have three options, I can put a rebuilt 69 vette v8 L88, I can sell that vette engine and get a more economical v6, or I can sell the vette and get a outboard. That vette engine will give me about 5-6g to work with budget wise. What would you do and why. (Additional info) The boats transom is being redone so I’ll have a clean slate to work with. I have a rebuilt outdrive as well.

If your budget is 5-6k, I don’t think outboards is and option.

I prefer outboards... I’ve done two conversions myself... never liked a cast iron motor in saltwater environment... always concerned about an explosion... by deck is flush so it was a real pain to reach down and work on the motor...
This is my last conversion on a 28’ Custom built Skipjack

A 200 on a 26’ flybridge just isn’t going to cut it. A 300 to 350hp outboard is what you’ll need if you decide to go single. A 200 would work if you ran twins. Going too small is one of the worst mistakes you can make on a repower. You can use a little of a lot but you can’t use a lot of a little.
Outboards are very much worth it if you can do it. I’ve never met anyone who wished they had an inboard after converting to outboards.
