Hi ALL,
Bad people are everywhere and you just can’t win even when you try sometimes. Cousin was fishing last year on an open boat (Asia), and he didn’t know any of the rest of the 9 people + 2 crews + captain. Excited to be fishing with his 3 new Stellas but being alone (so to speak) onboard didn’t help this time. He got his gear close to him the entire 7hours fishing but Napped a little on the way riding back. Boat got closer to the dock and he woke up, walked out to his gear ready to unload from the boat.....he found only 2 Stellas ..... told captain and captain ask if anyone seen/mistakenly-taken this reel. .....anyways, didn’t find the reel, police report didn’t help, captain couldn’t do anything but to give him “next free trip”.
I fished newJersey, Massachusetts, Cape Cod side party boat but so far my trips nothing like that happened.
Does this $hit happened often? Now I am starting to think should I bring all my gear next time or limit it so it’s easier managed. Of course I can bring less expensive gear but what’s the point of going fishing leaving your better gear at home? Chartering a $3000 boat is not an option.

what’s your take on this? Thoughts?

I was thinking I can make some sticker or decals to put on my rods/reels but those can be peeled off if he/she really wants it. Encraving on reels & epoxy name on rods Will make selling later impossible so that might not be an option. LOL when you are in the cabin sleeping you worry about the rods reels outside. When you outside fishing, you worry about your bags inside. WHAT THE #### LOL

I had a fat piece of shit, that Stole my jig, at the end of the day,
On the way back in, I cut it off,
And put it down on the filet table,
While I put my rod away, When I came back it was gone,
And back then the Norway jigs We’re like $8.00 ,
And at a factory I worked at , I only made $5.00 a hour,
So I was pissed, So I got a tip where it was ,
From another angler, So I went straight to the wheel house,
And it helped being a regular on that
Boat too , so I told the captain, And he was the owner to ,
So He stopped the boat,
And asked the guy if he could look in his box ,
and the boat wasn’t going Choice, but to open it ,
And my jig was sitting on top,
So he got banned for good, And I got my jig back,
It was funny seeing him get off the boat ,
And everyone yelled good bye,
You Fuckin thief.

I don't know if this is supposed to be a poem, but its really hard to read. And not a very good poem, so I gave up.

Jig is another hard one. There are more Shimano butterfly jigs with the same color on one boat than the number of butterfly jigs in one tackle store. Hard to prove “that’s mine!”.

People steal tackles, gears, shoes, shirts, hats, sunglasses, food & drinks, and even fish. I even watched one guy stole a scorpion fish, what an idiot. Just beware that fishing is a hobby where a lot of career criminals are involved in. I've come to find that the more pricey the trip is, the less chance there will be thieves on it.

I have had things go missing AKA Stolen... I always break down my gear and sleep with all my valuables.
I once caught a theif in my cabin... Ohh shit sorry dude wrong room... Yeah right! Wrong bag too... I escorted him upstairs reported to the first deckhand I saw... Captain stopped the boat, talked privately to the dude... Then I didn't see the guy again. Next the captain asked everyone to check their bunks to see if anything was missing.

Had a Shimano Jacket go missing on the Native Sun, Didn’t notice till I got home, probably my mistake. Another time on the Grande or Liberty I had a rod that kept getting moved. First I found it 10 spots down the rack, moved it back, then found it 20 spots down, moved it back, then found it on the other side of the boat, moved it back and started watching like a hawk, never moved again. Probably a deckhand messing with me.

I bring a bungee cord and put my rods in line at the side of the boat and drape the cord across the rods so first they do not place their rod where mine goes and second most will not remove the cord because it gains attention. I come of a 3 days trip out of fishermen's landing. My rod were bundle with my reels in a cart we had two carts as there was four of us. I went to get the truck while the guys stood around the carts waiting for the fish to be brought up to the landing. We get our fish and load the rods and I am missing a bundle of four rods. We look high and low can not find them. We ask for the video but they do not have any. Come to find out one of the guys on the trip took my rods from my cart and placed them in his truck. I have tape and my name mounted on each rod and reel. so it was easy to see who had them. We got them back but I thought I was going to jail for sure that day

And your three buddies were "watching" the two carts while this thief was removing your rods/reel from your cart?

    I know a couple guys...
Sadly this type of thing happens on Sporties more than you'd think. Every year, someone posts this type of thread and most theft victims it happens to dont post about it.

Having high-end gear like Stellas on a sport boat requires vigilance and constant monitoring.

Your cousin knew this as he was watching his reels closely until... he went below deck and dozed off.

Hindsight shows he should have took the reels off and put them in his backpack while he took a nap. That's an expensive lesson to learn.

Also, I agree the captain should have not docked until the reel was found. That would be the last time I would ever ride that boat if the captain just asked if anybody had it then off boarded and let the reel walk away.

Got my wallet stolen on a certain oceanside boat many years ago before cellphones,no calling the cops etc.(wallet was in my bunk in my bag).I told the captain on the way in but he disregarded it until another passenger came up missing some items,That passenger also identified himself as a US marshal!Captain came on PA and said no gets off the boat til we find the missing items, mysteriously all the items were found together thrown on a bunk right after. As we were docking with the boat still moving and not even tied up one of the deckhands and his riding for free tweaker girlfriend jump over the rail and onto the dock and start running,His girl trips over a big mooring cleat and fucks up her foot(bleeding)and the deckie just keeps running, lol.
Neither the landing or the captain gave 2 fucks about it,would have never got our shit back if not for the marshal taking the captain to the side and letting him know that this would not bode well for him.
    Never fished that landing again.

One reason I only fish charters, and only with folks I know well. We all have similar/same tackle, which could make thievery easy, but once you break a trust, it is never recovered. Most are more than happy to share with others, if asked first. It takes a special kind of person who just helps himself into someone else’s tackle box

We had a bottle thief on the OC95 years ago that was known to the crew, so much so that they locked up the beer fridge at night. The cook even told me I could stash my bottle and keep it secure because ‘that guy’ would find it.

For the 3.5 day run, that guy was a serious douche to the passengers and crew. On the last night, I had a little tequila left in my bottle. I added a little yellow liquid to it and left it in my tackle bag. We watched the guy swipe it, drain it, and chuck the bottle.

Here's how I try and mitigate my losses.
I take a picture of myself with all of my gear BEFORe the boat leaves.
I have pictures of each of my reels and rods together

BEFORE the boat docks, BEFORE the boat gets back into the bay. I check all of my gear is present.

Everytime I walk around the boat I look for all of my shit.

If ANYTHING is missing. I contact the Captain, and inform him. Captain makes a request over the loud speaker. No one turns it up. I ask the captain to have police waiting on shore for the boat to arrive. I make sure if the capinta has to call the police that the item missing total more than a thosuand dollars in gear. So when relayed to the authorities, the authorities understand than a felony has been committed.
(the Captain does NOT want a reputation for his boat/crew not doing everything legally possible to get your stuff back)

I only fish 2-3 day trips. Haven't been witness to anything happening. Having said that, when I fish Long Beach, Ventura or Santa Barb I take less expensive tackle.

I use the normal tie raps for my rod bundles but add this too. Not foolproof but it is a deterrent.

    Amazon product
Also, I do a quick video of the rods/reels I bring on a trip. One reason is so I don't forget what I've brought and the other is in the event of theft.
