Good point, San Diego was built on the Tuna Fleet of the 60s, and once upon a time people admired both the fleet and the men who worked the boats.

Personally I don’t have anyone telling me how to make my money or how to run my business except customers, fed, state and local govt’s. I like it that way and I’m sure most commercial fisherman feel the same way. I think this thread and others are designed to create dividing lines and contention among the fishing community, ignore it!

I think it is great that the Seiners share info with the sportboats. We should be greatful that they are even willing to share their knowledge.
For those of you who are against seiners, if you eat a tuna fish sandwich made from canned tuna, then you are hypocritcal. You have to remember, not everyone who consumes seafood has the means to catch their own. Someone has to provide this service.
I like a nice steak now and then, but I cannot raise cattle in my back yard so I rely on others to raise it and provide it for me.
Everybody always says that LEO's have a thankless job, well, I think commercial fisherman do also.
Go ahead and rip me but that is how I feel.

One more thing I would like too add, while I dont think it is un-ethical for a sportboat operator to be involved with a seinier, as a sportboat crew member I would rather them (seiners) not exist. I would give up eating tuna or for that matter any fin-fish if it meant survivial of the resource so that we can keep putting our customers on the fish. We live in a captialist society and as long as there is a demand for the product, somebody will be meeting that demand. With that being said it might as well be one of our own who has a big stake in the Seiners and we (sportfisherman) have no more right to the resource as the commercial fisherman.

Purse seiners and tuna pens, heroes to us all. They should be admired for their ingenuity and universally adored for their bravery and selflessness in suppling tuna to Japan.

It must be a acquired taste that I dont have, I would trade 100lbs. BFT for a 25ibs. WSB or a 48lbs.BFT for 6 cans of albacore at the going rate.

I'll go buy six cans of albacore and 25lbs of WSB you have 148lbs. of BFT to trade.
