OK, whats the point? I know how they get to be charter master/sponsor. besides that what is there role? I've heard how this or that person did a great job as charter master, what job is that? do they decide where to go fishing? does the swag really equal the price of the trip? I've never been on one, so whats the story?

Hopefully the chartmaster will #1 help the new guys, control the drunks and keep some order.

Sponsors generally are on the trip for free by providing SWAG of at least the value of the spots they take on the trip. Not every trip with someone's name on it is sponsored. I have a friend who is one of those people. The trip is basically open party and he pays full fare for the trip.

Chartermasters are a different story. True chartermasters sign a contract with the operation and are on the hook for the entire amount of the trip. They have say over who and how many people are on the trip. This is why limited load trips are often charters. In exchange for that privilege, the CM is obligated to make up any shortage in money if the trip doesn't fill.

HD/Bruce Carter was the greatest charter master ever. :urno1:

We all had our own gear and we already knew how to fish, so we werent worried about receiving the latest greatest duplicitous freebie tackle and/or rods/reels that we would have had to buy reels/rods for.

Nope.

Instead, HD popped for upgraded food for all the meals and Patron for cocktail 'hour'. :lux:

I've only done 2 day charters as a chartermaster but the above posts sums it up. I see to it that everyone has a good time, limits any bitching, help newbies out, work with the captain and crew about where to go and I get to say who comes aboard and the price per angler. Some are done all-inclusive with food included and others are a la cart. and yes, the CM is responsible for the price. If he cannot get enough anglers, then the balance comes out of his pocket. Some charters I hear set it up so they go free, but I always pay my way and not rely on others to pay it.

I also buy some decent items to raffle off, usually a couple nice reels, couple nice rods and then the usual hooks/sinker packs, jigs, etc....

This is an issue that should be discussed more because it is confusing and poorly understood by anglers who are new to multiday fishing.
Each boat has it's own policy regarding Charter Master/Sponsored trips. Generally a person who charters a boat for a specific trip will pay the entire cost up front, and is responsible for selling however many spots he decides to sell. Usually this will be a group of friends such as a fishing club or a company trip. This "Charter Master" has wide latitude on the fishing decision making process, room assignment and just about everything that matters except vessel safety issues. These trips are usually listed in the schedule as closed or private. The next category is "Trip Sponsor". Trip sponsors are often referred to as Charter Masters and this is were it gets confusing as they are not the same. A person becomes a trip sponsor because the boat owner believes that person can help sell the trip. He may have a group of friends or more often is associated with the fishing industry such as a tackle shop owner or fishing gear mfg. In any case, these are open trips, not charters. This person is expected to bring swag equal to at least the value of the trip, in return they get a free spot. Some sponsors go above and beyond the call of duty in this regard and sadly, some take advantage and bring very little. Last year I went on a 15 day trip sponsored by a fishing gear mfg. who gave us all a discount coupon worth about 8% off the retail cost of his product and a baggy of misc. junk. This was a $4500. trip. In short, trip sponsors have as much authority as the Capt. gives them and that is all over the map.

Which brings up another interesting topic......"giveaways and swag"......when did it become a expectation that there are going to be freebies and swag on a trip?????? Do any of you decide to go or not go on a trip because of the giveaways??????? I go to hang out with good people, relax and try and catch fish.

The reasons I decide to go a trip have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with what free shit is given away.......IMO a "chartermaster" should just try to ensure people are have a good time and that's it... the decisions of where and how to fish are up to the skipper..the swag thing is IMO out of control it would not bother me a bit if there were no give aways......JMO

The point I was trying to make is that there is a significant difference between a Charter Master and a Trip Sponsor. Charter Masters don't get a free spot and can do what they want, that is usually understood by their friends who go with them, there may or may not be swag. Trip Sponsors are different, they do get a free spot (with rare exception) and there is an expectation of swag appropriate for the type and cost of the trip at hand. There is no "free lunch" if the 26th. guy goes free, that is factored into the price for the other 25.

If the chartermaster does in fact get a free trip, then they should provide enough swag for the paying passengers to justify their free trip that we the paying passengers, are paying for. Nobody goes on a trip cause of the swag but because they know or hope to know and get along with the rest of the guys. Many boats now require the trip to sell out before the chartermaster gets his free trip also which makes sense.
I found some chartermasters are just more generous than others but that didn't necessarily determine if I go on the trip again or not. Just a bonus when there is nice swag!!!!

I can't help it if I'm lucky lol......but if you remember Salty, Johnny took my number out of the drawings last January and I didn't care......

And of they are giving it away I'll take it but what they are giving away is not the reason I choose to go on a trip.

Put it on already, then take a new pic for your avatar. :)
if a trip is listed at 24 passengers and they can overbook by one. hen they can have 1 to 2 others for sponsers or chartemrmaster. does that mean the trip can go with up to 27? goooooooing

I appreciate that. As Director of the SaltWater Anglers Club I paid the same rate as everyone else (more if you add swag) on our charters and often added some customized swag like embroidered sweatshirts, tees, vests, jackets, hand towels, and other momentos. We enjoyed steak & eggs for breakfast, prime rib, ribeye steaks & lobster for dinner and always a decent dessert item. I ALSO DID DAILY JACKPOTS which were always a hit and yes, the tequila poured freely and often. Margaritas too on hot weather trips. Realized we needed custom blackout curtains in the doorways below for those who couldn't hold their liquor.) LOL. Those were some fun days...some of the best in my life!

Crew member in the 5th picture, looking astern at the bloody deck. Is that Jordan Souza, later on Pacific Queen, now on the Angler. Great guy! White tee shirt, jeans, boots, getting ready to cast.

I don't know but from the look of things some anglers laid heavy lumber in the bow. PV good proving grounds for crew.

Greg is in the 1st pic. Reminds me of 2-3 day collonet trips. Mark making squid in LJ for some of those trips :D
